Lighting Design Service
Hazadous Area & Industrial
Thorne & Derrick are distributors and stockists for the Raytec SPARTAN range of ATEX lighting using LED technology for the illumination of hazardous area locations and potentially explosive atmospheres. Raytec are world leaders in LED lighting for hazardous area environments; their range of globally certified Ex LED lighting is approved for all ATEX, IEC Ex & UKEX Zone 1 and Zone 2 hazardous area environments, including UL /CSA C1D2 (Class 1 Division 2) installations.
Using the latest software, we can provide a FREE LIGHTING DESIGN SERVICEÂ for the specification and supply of ATEX & IECEx light fittings to provide safe and reliable lighting in hazardous areas and industrial locations.
Full Site Modelling
A 3D design plan is used to provide you with a visual representation of what the final installed lighting solution will actually look like, demonstrating the lux levels and spread of light that will be achieved on scene.
Lighting Design Video
Raytec can produce video designs of your final lighting scheme. Providing a 3D walk-around, this offers a real life insight into how the installation will perform – from all angles.
Illuminance Mapping
2D and 3D lighting plans can also be provided in a pseudo colour view, providing illuminance mapping of the intensity and spread of the light output across the site. This is used to show that the area has been evenly illuminated which is crucial for achieving the highest level of safety and security.
Lighting Positions
Raytec lighting is highly targeted, providing only the right amount of light needed on scene for maximum efficiency and minimum waste. Plotting the beam direction shows the precise aiming point of each LED panel, the angle of elevation and exact position of each luminaire.
Note: Directional lighting can allow for a much lower lumen output!
2D Lighting Positions
A 2D lighting design is used to plot the individual light fittings onto your site CAD drawing. It indicates the direction and spread of the lighting, and uses contour lines to show detailed lux levels within different areas. This type of design explains exactly how Raytec will achieve the desired outcome and can be used as a guide during the installation stage.
Download Raytec Photometric Data
Raytec Photometric data can be used by other engineers and designers within lighting design software to create your own tailored lighting schemes using Raytec White-Light LED luminaires.
Raytec manufacture on-site in the UK, which allows them to integrate all staff under one roof. This encourages knowledge sharing and the build of a true centre of excellence.
Not only are SPARTAN luminaires frequently delivered within 2 weeks but Thorne & Derrick, in partnership with Raytec, are also able to produce bespoke lighting solutions and exceed the expectations of our customers. We are proud to work with clients on the design and supply of world leading products which are manufactured in the UK, enabling the fast delivery of lighting systems.
Lighting Design Case Study
Hazardous Area & industrial
Following successful efforts to support with lighting designs, Thorne & Derrick have recently secured an order from an industrial Tier 2 COMAH site. Working closely with senior stakeholders, we provided a lighting solution for vehicle maintenance bays which were located on multiple large sites across the UK. Whilst the bays were not classified as an explosive area, the client wanted to maintain consistency across sites. Thorne & Derrick had previously supplied Raytec Spartan hazardous area light fittings to the client, and were asked to provide a lighting design and solution using Raytec Warrior fittings (The newly launched heavy industrial range).
The WARRIOR Linear range is ideal for new installations or to retrofit existing fluorescent installations which require high performance, reliable, White-Light illumination. Using Raytec’s field-proven, long-life LED technology, the Linear is specifically designed to provide battery back-up illumination for challenging environments and operation.

Following the successful specification, supply and installation of the light fittings to the the client, Thorne & Derrick have now been added to their approved vendor list – allowing the quick supply of future equipment.
Sample Lighting Design Applications
OFFSHORE RIG LIFEBOAT DROP
Raytec have produced a series of sample hazardous area lighting applications, showing an in depth demonstration of 3D modelling, illuminance mapping and calculations.
The following lighting design application is a sample showing an Offshore Rig Lifeboat Drop ATEX application using Spartan Flood White-Light.
Installation:Â Spartan Flood WL
Products Used: 24 WL – SPX-FL24-W (72W)
Crucial measurements of the area and mounting heights of luminaires must be communicated in writing along with special site conditions, if any.
All specification changes must be communicated to Raytec in order for the design to be modified appropriately.
A Maintenance factor of 0.85 is generally used in our calculations and is in accordance with European standards e.g. EN12464 and CIE 154:2003 guidelines.
The following values are based on exact calculations on calibrated lamps, luminaires and their arrangement. In practice, gradual divergences can
occur.

HAZARDOUS AREA LIGHTING DESIGN SERVICES
ATEX lighting design is an essential part of specifying lighting for any onshore or offshore location.
For specifiers going through the initial design process, a lighting design will provide peace of mind that the final solution will achieve the required, on-site lighting goal, with no surprises at the point of commissioning. Achieving the correct light levels on-site will improve safety and efficiency.
Thorne & Derrick work with Raytec to provide a hazardous area lighting design service that is completely free of charge, providing you with a visual 3D representation of the final lighting solution, with detailed lux levels and a true indication of lighting performance. Our lighting design experts will guide you through the entire process, ensuring the optimum solution is achieved.
