Explosion At Oil Recycling Plant In New Mexico

An explosion at an oil recovery and recycling company injured two people in New Mexico, US on August 18th. The incident happened at a facility belonging to Mesa Oil in the town of Belen, around 40 miles (64km) south of Albuquerque.

Fire officials say a recycling expansion tank on a tower exploded at Mesa Oil, located in the Rio Grande Industrial Park, at about 12:07 p.m. Belen Fire Chief Nicholas Moya said a preliminary examination of the scene indicates the 50-gallon tank was “over-pressurized” and exploded. Debris and the tank fell to the ground below.

The tank hit one person, who sustained injuries but was alert and conscious. Another person had minor burns. Both were transported to an Albuquerque hospital.

There were four small fires on different levels of the tower before firefighters were able to take control. New Mexico State Police and environmental personnel were called to evaluate the situation.

Belen Fire Department said that a fire was contained and extinguished soon after firefighters arrived at the scene.

Officials said that the reason for the tank becoming over-pressurised was unknown.

Mesa Oil and its subsidiary, Mesa Environmental, specialise in oil recovery and oil recycling. Used oil is processed at the company’s three facilities in Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico using a unique internal processing technology.

A VIEW FROM SITE

A Spectacular Night Time View

When working in the dark is not an option, don’t jeopardise safety with substandard lighting. AJV Technical Equipment FZCO have installed a number of lights from Raytec on an offshore rig in the UAE, and have kindly permitted us to share their images of the installations and their spectacular view on site. AJV Technical Equipment are a leading supplier of hazardous and industrial lighting based in the Middle East

SPARTAN Floodlights and Linear luminaires, including emergency variants, were installed across the rig to provide a safe environment for offshore drilling workers during low-light conditions. This included illuminating the lifeboat areas (to support evacuation procedures in an emergency scenario), around the helideck, and general illumination throughout the rig.

PROJECTS & NEWS

Upgrading Lighting from Flueroscent to LED
Progression of Lighting Candle, Tungsten, Fluorescent & LED

Progression of Lighting Candle, Tungsten, Fluorescent & LED

At Thorne & Derrick, we understand that harsh industrial or hazardous environments demand reliable & correctly certified equipment. That is why we are constantly striving to improve operational performance by protecting you, your plant and your equipment.

There is an international trend in the global hazardous area industry sector to upgrade conventional Fluorescent explosion proof lighting to use energy-efficient LED lighting technology with ATEX certification.

Thorne & Derrick have been assisting with a number of upgrade projects, whereby the client has had a requirement to upgrade their existing lighting fixtures with the latest LED technology. A recent client selected Raytec Zone 2 Bulkhead Fittings to use in place of their current fittings.

Raytec Bulkhead lights are globally certified to Zone 2 offering long-life LED technology The compact, low profile design is ideal for restricted space applications, and also allows easy access to the back of the unit with rear cable entries to hide and protect cables from damage.

“End of halogen light bulbs spells brighter and cleaner future”. The Government has stated that halogen light bulbs will be banned from September 2021 with fluorescent light bulbs to follow, cutting emissions and saving consumers on their energy bills. Shift to LED bulbs will cut 1.26 million tonnes of CO2 – the equivalent of removing over half a million cars from UK roads.

It is expected that LED light bulbs will account for 85% of all bulbs sold by 2030. In addition, the government also plans to start phasing out the sale of high-energy fluorescent lightbulbs, with a view to bringing an end to their sale from September 2023. Read the full article here.

Terminology Explained

Every industry has its own language, terms and acronyms. Below is a selection of the common terms in use in the Explosion industry today and how they are employed in current directives.

Ex Specialists

This month we focus on Apparatus Groups and Temperature Classes for Common Flammable Dusts and Fibres – Group III

When considering installations that are at risk of a potential explosion due to dust ignition, the equipment used is classified in much the same way as with gases. No equipment should be installed where the surface temperature of the equipment is greater than the ignition temperature of the given hazard. Below are some common dust hazardous and their minimum ignition temperature.

Ignition Temperatures for Common Flammable Dusts and Fibres
Material Ignition Temperature
Cloud Layer
Coal Dust 380°C 225°C
Polythene 420°C (melts)
Methyl Cellulose 420°C 320°C
Starch 460°C 435°C
Flour 490°C 340°C
Sugar 490°C 460°C
Grain Dust 510°C 300°C
Phenolic Resin 530°C > 450°C
Aluminium 590°C > 450°C
PVC 700°C > 450°C
Soot 810°C 570°C
