& Hazardous Area Equipment

Hazcon Inc. provides a full suite of consulting services for manufacturers of electrical equipment for hazardous locations and explosive atmospheres.

Their primary focus is to help manufacturers prepare for all phases of certification of these products – from product design, approval and installation to certification maintenance.

Application of Standard IEC 61010-1

IEC 61010-1 is a hazard base standard covering laboratory, measurement and process control equipment. This standard includes any type of hazard which could arise during installation, operation, service and maintenance.

IEC 61010-1 addresses the requirements for protection against types of hazard listed below:

  1. Electric Shock or Burn
  2. Mechanical Hazards
  3. Spread of Fire
  4. Excessive Temperature and Skin Burns
  5. Effects of Fluids and Fluid Pressure
  6. Effects of Radiation, Including Lasers, Sonic or Ultrasonic Pressure
  7. Liberated Gases, Explosion or Implosion
IEC 61010-1

IEC 61010-1

For any North American hazardous location certification (Zone or Division markings), the equipment must first comply with the general safety, also known as ordinary location requirements.

Therefore, compliance with standard CSA/UL 61010-1 is the FIRST step for laboratory, measurement and process control equipment that will be used in a hazardous location.

This should be taken into account for all hazloc certification in North America.

An ill prepared or unprepared application can easily extend the process.
