DSEAR Risks in Explosive Atmospheres
Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002

Special thanks to Marc Mulligan from Projex Solutions for permission to use their DSEAR video
Dangerous substances put peoples’ safety at risk from fire, explosion and corrosion of metal. DSEAR puts duties on employers to protect people from these risks and ensure their safety in the workplace, and to members of the public who may be put at risk by work activity. The HSE usually recommends that DSEAR is updated every 3-5 years dependent upon the risk levels of the operations. Compliance with DSEAR encompasses many facets of business activity including:
- Risk assessment of plant operations
- Defining of any hazardous zones together
- Installation of hazard compliant equipment
- Preparation of explosion protection records
What are Dangerous Substances?
Dangerous substances are any substances used or present at work that could, if not properly controlled, cause harm to people because of a fire, explosion, or corrosion of metal. These substances can be found in nearly all workplaces.
Examples are dangerous substances include:
- Solvents
- Paints
- Pressurised Gases & Substances
- Varnishes
- Dusts from Machining and Sanding
- Dusts from Foodstuff
- Flammable Gases such as Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG)
The Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres or DSEAR are directives put in place to protect workers.
DSEAR requires an employer to:
- Check what dangerous substances are in the workplace and the associated risks
- Put measures in place to remove or control the risks
- Put safeguards to protect against the effects of incidents/dangerous substances
- Organise plans and measures to deal with accidents, incidents and emergencies
- Ensure employees are properly trained
- Identify and classify areas of the workplace where explosive atmospheres may occur
