Overcoming Cold Climate Challenges

Thorne & Derrick, the UK’s leading Industrial & Process Heating Equipment Distributors, have successfully designed and delivered a customised electrical heating solution to protect vital power supplying crane and lifting operations on sub-zero Antarctic missions.

The customised electrical insulating and heating jackets provide effective winterisation to crane Hydraulic Power Units (HPU’s) on board the RRS Sir David Attenborough.

The RRS Sir David Attenborough built at the Cammell Laird shipyard in Liverpool is a polar research vessel owned by the Natural Environment Research Council, to be operated by the British Antarctic Survey for the purposes of both research and logistic support.

Thorne & Derrick supply UK and international clients with fit-for-purpose, reliable and safe electrical heating products for severe, hostile environmental conditions.

Frost Protection

Survey Design Deliver

Thorne & Derrick were contacted by their Marine & Offshore client due to concerns raised about the potential risk of critical damage caused by freezing to the on-board crane HPUs.

Several alternative heating methods were evaluated but the client needed to maintain ease of access to the HPUs for routine inspection and maintenance. After conducting a site survey and addressing all clients operational and technical requirements the design heat loss calculation by Thorne & Derrick’s Heating Design Engineer proposed removable customised heating jackets as the most cost effective and optimal electrical solution.

Electrical Heating Jackets

Removable | to facilitate unobstructed and instant maintenance access to the HPU’s the electrical heating jackets featured simple fasten-on sections.

Removable Bespoke Insulation Jackets

Customised | tailor-made and versatile surface heating solutions for harsh and hazardous locations in the marine and offshore industries.

After conducting a site survey and taking all clients requirements a bespoke heating solution was suggested by T&D

Service | we design, develop and arrange manufacture of high performance, reliable and optimised electrical heating solutions.
