Solenoid Valves
ATEX Certified for Hazardous Areas
Thorne & Derrick are Authorised Stockists and Official Emerson ASCO Partners for their ranges of ATEX certified solenoid valves for hazardous area locations – contact our Technical Sales Engineers now for immediate price and delivery for both UK and Export orders and enquiries.
ASCO are the leading manufacturer of hazardous area solenoid valves suitable for use in ATEX rated Zone 1 and Zone 2 hazardous areas.
ASCO solenoid valves for hazardous area zones are used to control critical flow of water, air, gas, oil and steam providing excellent stability, increasing up-time and ensuring the highest levels of productivity.
Solenoid valves are key components for process automation systems and users depend on these to operate without fail in hazardous areas or explosive atmospheres to ensure continuous and safe operation of the process and plant.
➡ See ASCO solenoid valves for the complete range of flow control valves for air, gas, water, oil, and steam.

Low Power & intrinsically Safe Hazardous Area Solenoid Valves
Molded one piece valves with highly efficient solenoid cartridges and special low wattage coils – these valves are designed for use in the automation of plant control systems to provide PLC compatibility and reduced battery drain.
Selecting & Ordering The Correct Solenoid Valve
When ordering solenoid valves, there are a number or checks and information that should be carried out prior to purchase in order to ensure the correct valve is chosen for the specific application.
When selecting a valve the following information should be known:
- Valve Type – Whether a 2 way, 3 way or 4 way valve is required
- Operation – Will the valve be normally open, normally closed or universal
- Pipe Size – The pipe size or flow requirement
- Media – The fluid to be controlled and measured
- Pressure – The minimum and maximum operating pressures
- Temperature – The minimum and maximum fluid and ambient temperatures
- Voltage – Voltage and frequency to be used
- Extras – Special seals, special seats, brackets, etc.
- Hazardous Area Location – Class/Division or Zone requirement for potentially explosive atmospheres
With over 50,000 different valves in the range available from ASCO , T&D can offer a solution for almost every industry application and fluid control requirements.
environmental operating conditions & key considerations
When selecting a solenoid valve there are many environmental and application conditions to consider including body and solenoid housing materials, seal materials and air quality.
Quality of air – the sensitivity of inferior air quality depends on both the valve and solenoid type: ASCO solenoid valves do not require lubrication. To ensure the quality of air is acceptable, air service equipment is recommended to prepare the air prior to be applied to the control system.
Categories/ zone classification – apparatus used must be certified for the Zone, Class/Divsion and hazardous area location into which the valve is to be installed.
Hazardous Area Solenoid Valves In The Oil And Gas Industry
The oil and gas industry naturally has many areas or Zones that are potentially explosive with hazardous area locations classified as constantly hazardous where the threat from hazardous gases or dusts is ever present. For over 60 years, ASCO have manufactured dependable valves and actuation products for critical points throughout the oil and gas production industry.
ASCO 3 and 4 way pilot valves are the most varied, proven and reliable solenoid pilot valves, typically installed throughout the plant as the primary device for process valve actuation as well as the shutdown valve.
ASCO manual reset valves are manufactured from corrosion resistant materials and their industrial strength components make them ideal for the oil and gas industry and the harsh conditions faced.
Actuated global valve assemblies are a cost effective alternative to an actuated ball valve assembly and this linear on/off valve is a stand alone solution for a variety of applications.
ASCO filters and regulators treat air quality and regulate pressure throughout plant pneumatic systems. These valves are used throughout the refinery in order to control pressure and meet filtration requirements.
These high performance flow control products are available in many configurations and materials including full 316L stainless steel for use in corrosive environments.
From the contractor and design engineers through to refinery instrumentation, process control, safety and maintenance engineers, ASCO valves offer the performance and reliability required for products used in hazardous area industries.
The range of ASCO safety application valves have the ability to perform online testing of redundant solenoids and automatic partial stoke testing of the process valve.
