Product Overview

The Marechal SPeX is part of the Marechal Hazardous Area Plug range, designed for demanding environments where robust, watertight connections and controlled operation are required. SPeX is ATEX certified for Zone 1 & Zone 2 and supports high current single pole power distribution up to 680A (depending on category and cable).

SPeX connectors are automatically IP65/IP66 when connected, with a reliable interlocking system that supports safe procedures for connection and disconnection. Selection should be based on ambient temperature, cable cross section and the required ATEX temperature class.

Install & Operation Guidelines

Key safety notes: Electrical interlocking with a contactor is compulsory. The pilot circuit supply must be protected against transient over-voltages of 4kV using an appropriate isolating device.

View assembly, wiring & operation guidance

Assembly: Insert cable through the cable gland and handle or through the inclined sleeve.

Wiring of the pilot wires: Use flexible conductors 0.5–1.0mm². Connect to microswitch wires using the insulated crimp lugs supplied and an appropriate crimping tool.

Wiring of the main conductor: Respect the ATEX (T5) classification. Strip the conductor by 46mm. Use the correct crimp die (e.g., NFC 20-130 / VDE 0220) — hexagonal crimping is recommended. Apply torque approx. 70 N·m. Maintain the rear of the contact with a 24mm key while tightening.

Connector assembly: Assemble handles using supplied gaskets/screws and tighten the cable gland with an appropriate tool. To achieve IP65/IP66 for an interlocked connector, use a cable incorporating the two pilot wires required for the interlock (or an ATEX cable gland solution allowing the main cable plus the two pilot cables).

Metal inclined sleeve: Respect air/creepage distances for main and auxiliary circuits. Connect the metal inclined sleeve to earth.

Watertightness & identification: Do not forget the colour-coded ring at the rear of the inlet/socket-outlet. Ensure caps are reassembled after use. For IP65/IP66, assemble the socket-outlet/connector cap with its slot facing the protruding finger.

Operation (summary):

  1. Insert plug straight into socket-outlet until a “click” is heard. Avoid cable strain on the socket-outlet.
  2. Pull on the plug to confirm it is properly latched.
  3. To close the pilot circuit, turn the ring towards “1” up to the stop and check continuity of the pilot.
Do not attempt to turn the ring towards “1” when no plug is engaged.
  4. To open the pilot circuit and unlock, turn the ring back to “0”, press the button to release the plug, then refit caps on both sides.
