Selecting the Right Lumen Level

As LED light fittings are more efficient than the High Intensity Discharge (HID) equivalent, a watt-for-watt replacement would produce significantly higher than desired levels of lighting. Generally, an LED equivalent hazardous area light fittings produce the same light, but with 1/3 to 1/2 the energy consumption of HID lighting. More information on upgrading from HID to LED lighting can be found here.

HID Equivalent LED Lumen Range
70 Watts 2000 – 3000
100 Watts 3000 – 4000
150 Watts 4000 – 5000
175 Watts 5500 – 7000
250 Watts 8000 – 10000
350 Watts 10000 – 12000
400 Watts 12000 – 14000
600 Watts 16000 – 18000
750 Watts 18000 – 20000
1000 Watts 24000 – 26000
1250 Watts 29000 – 31000
1500 Watts 37000 – 39000

As mounting height, beam pattern, and overall lighting conditions can all affect the perceived lighting levels, it is always best to request a lighting simulation and a light fitting sample. Contact us at Thorne & Derrick for more information.
