VEGA VEGAPULS 31
Radar Level Sensor
VEGAPULS 31
VEGAPULS 31 is a radar level sensor manufactured by VEGA that provides non-contact level measurement of liquids and bulk solids in standard applications in all industrial plants. The sensor has ex approval and is certified to the current ATEX & IEC standards. It is particularly suitable for use in water treatment, storage tanks with acids, lyes and additives in all industrial areas, or for measuring levels in plastic tanks or IBC container from the outside through the tank wall. In bulk solids the sensors are used in small bulk solids silos or open containers.
The VEGAPULS 31 is a maintenance-free operation due to non-contact 80 GHz radar technology and is able to give exact measurement with on-site display and 3-button operation for results independent of medium properties and process conditions.
A low cost sensor with a a 4 … 20 mA/HART output, measuring range of up to 15 and a plastic housing (IP66/IP67) making the VEGAPULS 31 suitable for simple measuring tasks.

How It Works?
The level sensor emits a continuous radar signal through the antenna. The emitted signal is reflected by the medium and received as an echo by the antenna. The frequency difference between the emitted and received signal is proportional to the distance and depends on the filling height. The determined filling height is converted into a respective output signal and output as measured value. VEGAPULS 31 is user-friendly, wireless setup and diagnosis via Bluetooth with mobile devices or PC.
Appplications
Level in multi-stage evaporation systems
VEGAPULS 31 radar sensor is for the continuous level measurement in the evaporation chamber. In thermal seawater desalination, the drinking water is produced in multi-stage evaporation processes. By connecting the various stages in series with ever lower temperatures, the system’s coefficient of performance is significantly increased and its overall efficiency enhanced. Reliable monitoring of the pressures and levels in the various stages is an important prerequisite for optimal operation of the plant.
Level measurement of fuel
VEGAPULS 31 provides non-contact level measurement of fuel with radar sensors. Backup generators are a common safeguard at lift stations to maintain operation during power outages. Day tanks at each lift station and a main tank at the plant are used to store the fuel. To make sure there is sufficient fuel when needed, the level in the tanks is continuously measured.
