Problem

A power generation manufacturer needed a signal connector to distribute data to its control units within a generator. The connector would have to be able to handle high
vibration, shock and extreme temperatures while also being cost effective.

The old design used an Amphenol Military D38999 III connector which met all of the shock, vibration and temperature requirements. However the manufacturer felt that it cost too much. In order to meet all of the specifications with a cheaper, alternative connector, metal would be the only option.

Amphenol Industrial developed a new lower cost metallic version, the Amphe-Lite.

The focus of the design was on reducing the cost of the shell and insert as well as providing a 90º adapter.

When completed this connector provided the customer with the same performance as the older D38999 III series connector, but was much more in line with their cost expectations.
