Thorne & Derrick, The Explosive Atmosphere Experts, distribute products to provide safe Heat, Light & Power to hazardous area locations.

In this post we shall outline the scope of our hazardous area certified Electrical, Process Control & Instrumentation products suitable for offshore HVAC systems and temporary accommodation modules.

We consult with our clients to supply explosion-proof Heat, Light & Power solutions for offshore vessels – this includes FPSO, Gas Production Platforms, Jack Up Units, Drilling Rigs, Cable Laying Vessels and Offshore High Voltage Stations.

HVAC and Power systems must handle harsh weather, turbulent waves, explosive atmospheres, extreme temperatures, seawater splash and hydrocarbon exposure – the hazardous area certified equipment supplied by T&D ensures safe and reliable service to compressor halls, switchboard rooms, instrument rooms, battery rooms, transformer rooms and low voltage/high voltage electrical distribution rooms.

Safety Offshore

T&D can meet the certification challenges posed by hazardous area locations by ensuring all heating, lighting and power distribution equipment is safe for use in potentially explosive atmospheres – we are experienced in servicing offshore accommodation and workspace modules with ATEX and IECEx approved equipment.

hazardous area Heating

T&D are Main Stockists and Distributors for EXHEAT – we hold extensive stocks of EXHEAT FAW 240/425v, single phase, 1kW-3kW hazardous area air warmers with T class rating, T3.

EXHEAT FAW heaters provide comfortable working conditions in hazardous areas where the potentially explosive atmosphere is classified as a Zone 1 or Zone 2 (IIA, IIB, IIC) gas group.

Hazardous area room thermostats provide frost protection and condensation prevention and Zone 1 and Zone 2 anti-condensation space heaters are also available.

EXHEAT HEF hazardous area anti-condensation and space heaters provide frost protection and condensation prevention and Zone 1 and Zone 2 applications. Hazardous area (flameproof) room thermostats are available but not for use with anti-condensation heaters as these are self-regulating type.

For non-hazardous area, safe location heating we stock industrial convector heaters suitable for floor or wall mounting with optional adjustable 0- 40°C room temperature controlled thermostat.

  • Air Heaters & Air Duct Heaters – Ex d Flameproof & Ex e Increased Safety Electrical Heaters (Zone 1 & Zone 2)
  • Immersion Heaters – Ex d Flameproof Rod, Flanged & Removable Core Heaters (Zone 1 & Zone 2)
  • Water Heaters – Point Of Use Ex d Flameproof Calorifiers & Bulk Storage Heaters (Zone 1 & Zone 2)
  • Line Heaters – Hazardous Area Ex d Flameproof Line Heaters Maintain Process Liquid Flow (Zone 1 & Zone 2)
Hazardous Area Room Thermostats

Hazardous Area Room Flameproof Thermostats – EXHEAT HFT / AFT / RFT thermostats are certified according to ATEX & IECEx where a potentially explosive atmosphere is designated as a Zone 1 or Zone 2 (IIA, IIB, IIC) gas group

Flameproof Ex d or Increased Safety Ex e ?

Whether the hazardous area classification is Flameproof Ex d and Increased Safety Ex e we can provide explosion-proof heating equipment for safe operation according to ATEX and IECEx certification with suitable T-Class Rating and Gas Groups compatibility.

H2S Sour Gas detection

T&D also distribute H2S gas detectors to check and monitor atmospheric presence of flammable and toxic gases including hydrogen sulphide (H2S) and toxic sour gas mixtures to guarantee safety of maintenance crews and workers.

H2S Risk Areas

H2S gas can be expected in all areas of the offshore rig where drilling fluid and associated equipment is located – rig floors, substructures, shale shakers, mud cleaners, mud pit rooms, mud pump rooms and well test equipment.

Being heavier than air, H2S will settle in low-lying and poorly ventilated areas and will dissolve in oil and water present in those areas.

H2S Physiological Effects

The primary route of H2S gas exposure is by inhalation – in gas concentrations less than or around 50 parts per million (ppm), H2S acts as a mucous membrane and respiratory tract irritant; symptoms include coughing, shortness of breath, eye and throat irritation.

At concentrations of approximately 100 ppm, H2S paralyses the olfactory nerve and the sense of smell – the toxic gas is rapidly absorbed by the lungs and transferred to the blood circulation, where it inhibits the cytochrome oxidase enzyme system, which regulates the uptake of oxygen at the cellular level.

Process Instrumentation

T&D are Explosive Atmosphere specialists distributing Process & Instrumentation Equipment to the hazardous area industries where ATEX & IECEx certified equipment is required (Class/Division/Zones 1 & Zone 2).
