Thorne & Derrick distribute from stock the most extensive range of ATEX Lights & Hazardous Area Lighting certified according to ATEX and IECEx for Zone 1 and Zone 2 lighting applications – this includes hazardous area floodlights, fluorescent, LED and wellglass type lights for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.
Hazardous Area Zones
The following provides information about the Zone and Category definitions to enable the correct specification of hazardous area lighting and ATEX lights for both gas and dust type explosive atmospheres.
Zone 0 Gas
Zone 0 – according to ATEX a hazardous area location in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air of dangerous and flammable substances usually in the form of gases, mists or vapours is present continuously or for long periods or frequently.
Zone 1 Gas
Zone 1 – according to ATEX a hazardous area location in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air of dangerous and flammable substances usually in the form of gases, mists or vapours is likely to occur in normal operation occasionally.
Zone 2 Gas
Zone 2 – according to ATEX a hazardous area location in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air of dangerous and flammable substances usually in the form of gases, mists or vapours is likely to occur in normal operation, but if it does occur, will persist for a short period only.
Zone 20 Dust
Zone 20 – according to ATEX a hazardous area location in which an explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of combustible dust in air is present continuously, or for long periods of time.
Zone 21 Dust
Zone 21 – according to ATEX a hazardous area location in which an explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of combustible dust in air is likely to occur in normal operation occasionally.
Zone 22 Dust
Zone 22 – according to ATEX a hazardous area location in which an explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of combustible dust in air is not likely to occur in normal operation occasionally but, if it does occur, will persist for a short period only.
The zone classification for hazardous areas and corresponding equipment categories for lighting are:
- Zone 0 or Zone 20 – Category 1 Equipment
- Zone 1 or Zone 21 – Category 2 Equipment
- Zone 2 or Zone 22 – Category 3 Equipment

Category 1 hazardous area lighting can also be used in Zones 1 and 21 and Category 1 & 2 lighting can be used in Zones 2 & 22.
Temperature Classification
For Hazardous Area Lighting
The temperature classification of a given gas is the temperature above which an appropriate mixture of that gas with air will ignite – for safety and protection against risk of explosion it is critical that the maximum surface temperature of any part of the hazardous area lighting or equipment which may come into contact with the gas/air mixture, does not exceed the ignition temperature of the mixture.
The hazardous area temperature class, “T rating”, is normally based on an upper ambient temperature of +40°C.

Gas Groups
For hazardous area classification and to ensure correct selection of safe lighting for hazardous area locations all explosive gases, vapours and mists are grouped according to various properties such as ignition temperature, the energy needed to ignite the flammable mixture and flame transmission capability.
Hazardous area lighting certified for Group IIC is suitable for IIB and IIA, whilst equipment certified for IIB can also be used in IIA. Group IIA certified lighting can only be used on Group IIA applications.
