VEGA PROTRAC Radiation Based Level Measurement
Application Details
High activity radiation sources are used to penetrate through the process vessels when using a radiation source for NDT (Non Destructive Testing) for tower scans and site radiography.
The radiation source is able to have an impact on the operation of any close by nucleonic level systems.
If the operation is affected the output can be decreased by the increased radiation present at the detector for example sending incorrect information about process conditions and influencing the control loop or a measured value potentially passing through an alarm or tip point.

The Solution
VEGA has created the PROTRAC range which is software dedicated for monitoring background radiation change.
Every PROTRAC detector also provides protection against unnecessary shutdowns due to false trips. The level of protection can be changed and increased if necessary by using a dedicated external detector.
Radiation Based Level Measurement – The Measuring Principal
In radiometric, i.e. radiation-based, level measurement, the measuring device is mounted outside the tank. A cesium-137 or cobalt-60 isotope sends out focussed gamma rays.
On the opposite side of the tank, a sensor picks up the gamma rays that have been attenuated by the medium. The level can be calculated via the intensity of incoming radiation.
