Ex Junction Box In Water Tower Pump Application

BACKGROUND

An applied raw water tower pump on board a Jack-up Rig.

The Ex junction box for the water tower pump must have a large power and signal load and control. It must be EX-rated for use in hazardous area Zone 2, with a minimum ingress protection rating of IP56.

Other important factors are the cost and safety control.

PROBLEM

The isolator switch must be able to be installed in the EEx d junction box. However the size of a standard EEx d junction box is very large and often too expensive.

SOLUTION provided by Amphenol

Amphenol Industrial Star Line EX connectors have a special design which makes them an ideal solution.  It has the correct power and signal carrying capabilities and by adding in a jump wire, the plug can return the signal to the junction box when the plug and receptacle mate. The use of EEx e stainless steel junction boxes and terminal blocks can reduce the size.
