Eaton FHF dSLB20 Xenon Strobe Light

The dSLB20 xenon strobe provides a high-intensity visual warning for alarm, notification and process-signalling applications in hazardous areas.

Its xenon flash tube produces approximately 60 flashes per minute at a frequency of 1Hz. The product is available with 5J and 15J flash-energy configurations.

The unit is designed for continuous operation and is activated when the electrical supply is applied. Different DC and AC voltage options allow it to be integrated into a range of alarm and control systems.

The unit incorporates a flameproof aluminium housing, hardened borosilicate glass dome and an increased-safety terminal compartment. IP66/IP67 ingress protection makes the enclosure suitable for indoor and outdoor installation.

A stainless-steel mounting plate with an integrated junction box is available for creating a combined signalling assembly.

This product may also appear in legacy specifications as the MEDC dSLB20 xenon beacon.

There’s also a Eaton FHF dSLB20 LED Signal Light version.

dSLB20 5J & 15J Flash-Energy Options

The dSLB20 is available in two flash-energy levels. The required output should be selected against the viewing distance, ambient lighting, lens colour, alarm design and project specification.

dSLB20 5 Joule

The 5J version is available for 12V DC, 24V DC, 80V DC, 115V AC and 230V AC supplies.

It provides the same approximate 1Hz flash frequency with lower current consumption than the equivalent 15J configuration.

dSLB20 15 Joule

The higher-output 15J version is available for 24V DC, 80V DC, 115V AC and 230V AC supplies.

It is intended for applications requiring increased flash energy or stronger visual warning performance.

Flash Energy Flash Frequency Average Flash-Tube Life
5J Approximately 60 flashes/minute at 1Hz Approximately 5 million flashes
15J Approximately 60 flashes/minute at 1Hz Approximately 5 million flashes

Hazardous Area Certification

Certified dSLB20 variants are available for explosive gas and combustible-dust atmospheres. The final marking and permitted temperature range must be confirmed against the selected product code.

ATEX Approval PTB 99 ATEX 1028
IECEx Approval IECEx PTB 09.0062
Gas Marking II 2 G Ex d e IIC T5, T6 Gb
Dust Marking II 2 D Ex tb IIIC T95°C, T80°C Db
Hazardous Area Zones Zones 1 and 2 for gas; Zones 21 and 22 for combustible dust
Ingress Protection IP66 and IP67
T6 Temperature Range –55°C to +40°C
T5 Temperature Range –55°C to +55°C

Housing and Construction

The xenon flash electronics are contained within a compact flameproof aluminium housing. The enclosure can be surface-varnished or powder-coated and is normally supplied in a yellow and blue finish.

A hardened borosilicate glass dome protects the xenon light source. A stainless-steel protection cage helps guard the glass against accidental impact.

The terminal compartment uses increased-safety protection, creating a combined Ex d e product construction.

The dSLB20 can be installed indoors or outdoors and can operate in any mounting orientation.

Eaton FHF dSLB20 Xenon FAQs

What is the difference between the 5J and 15J dSLB20?

The difference is the flash energy produced by the xenon tube. The 15J version provides higher flash energy but generally consumes more electrical current.

How frequently does the dSLB20 flash?

Both 5J and 15J variants flash approximately 60 times per minute at a frequency of 1Hz.

Can the dSLB20 be installed outdoors?

Yes. Its IP66/IP67 enclosure is suitable for indoor and outdoor installation when correctly installed with suitable cable-entry equipment.

Which hazardous area zones are supported?

Certified variants are suitable for gas Zones 1 and 2 and combustible-dust Zones 21 and 22.

Is the dSLB20 LED page the same product?

No. This page covers the xenon strobe version with 5J and 15J flash-energy options. The dSLB20 LED uses LEDs and provides steady, blinking, strobe and electronically rotating modes.
