Cable glands are used as cable entry devices to provide a safe connection of suitable cables to enclosures and maintain the ingress properties of the installation. In hazardous area classified areas they also need to maintain the explosion protection of equipment.
The IECEx & ATEX certified cable glands for use in Zone 1 (Gas Group) are:
i) II 2G Ex db – Per Standard IEC/EN 60079-1 (Flameproof)
ii) II 2G Ex eb – Per Standard IEC/EN 60079-7 (Increased Safety)
IEC 60079-1:2014 is available as IEC 60079-1:2014 RLV which contains the International Standard and its Redline version, showing all changes of the technical content compared to the previous edition.
IEC 60079-1:2014contains specific requirements for the construction and testing of electrical equipment with the type of protection flameproof enclosure “d”, intended for use in explosive gas atmospheres. This standard supplements and modifies the general requirements of IEC 60079-0. Where a requirement of this standard conflicts with a requirement of IEC 60079-0, the requirement of this standard will take precedence. This seventh edition cancels and replaces the sixth edition, published in 2007, and constitutes a technical revision. The numerous changes are identified in the Foreward of the document. Keywords: flameproof enclosure “d”, explosive gas atmospheres.
IEC 60079-7:2015specifies the requirements for the design, construction, testing and marking of electrical equipment and Ex Components with type of protection increased safety “e” intended for use in explosive gas atmospheres. Electrical equipment and Ex Components of type of protection increased safety “e” are either:
– Level of Protection “eb” (EPL “Mb” or “Gb”); or
– Level of Protection “ec” (EPL “Gc”). Level of Protection “eb” applies to equipment or Ex Components, including their connections, conductors, windings, lamps, and batteries; but not including semiconductors or electrolytic capacitors.
Level of Protection “ec” applies to equipment or Ex Components, including their connections, conductors, windings, lamps, and batteries; and also including semiconductors and electrolytic capacitors.
In North America, cables and cable glands need to be approved for both ordinary locations and hazardous locations. Also, installation of cable glands are limited to those cables that have been designed, tested and approved for Class 1 Division 1 C1D1, cable seals are required at all terminations.
“Class I, Division 1” Cable Glands:
i) Per Standards CSA C22.2 No. 18.3 (O/L) & CSA C22.2 No. 174 (H/L) for Canada
ii) Per Standards UL 514B (O/L) & UL 2225 (H/L) for the USA.
Note: “AEx db” and “AEx eb” glands need to comply with UL 2225 for installation in hazardoud Zone 1.

The Importance of Grounding of Intrinsically Safe Devices in hazardous areas.
Intrinsic safety is system concept and it prevents explosion in hazardous areas by limiting electrical energy. The IS device which is installed in a classified area needs to be connected to a source of power (IS barrier) by cabling. Therefore, possible faults within the power system and cabling need to be considered.
When faults occur within safe area, the ground (earth) wire connected to the barrier busbar will provide a return path to the main earth mat or neutral star point of the distribution transformer.
But how about when power faults occur within the hazardous area and cause the power voltage to be appeared on the metal enclosure of the IS device?
A grounding facility is required for all electrical equipment with metal enclosures (including IS devices) to divert large fault current into a low-impedance return path and preventing high voltage being generated in hazardous area.
Per Article 504.50 of NFPA70 and Rule 18-072 of CEC: “Intrinsically Safe apparatus with metal enclosure shall be connected to equipment grounding conductor”.

In accordance with standard IEC 60079-2, “Ex pyb” marking provides Equipment Protection Level (EPL) Gb with EPL Gc internal to the pressurized enclosure. It simply means the internal components must be evaluated against hazardous location Zone 2.
“Zone 2” products require IP54 rated enclosure and in some cases the enclosure will need to be provided in end-use application (i.e. Zone 2 Power Supply). The positive pressure inside the pressurized enclosure will provide a safe area inside and prevent ingress of dust and water into the enclosure.
The internal “Zone 2” products must not remain energized when the the type of explosion protection “pyb” is not in operation as there is no IP54 enclosure in effect.
In case of use of batteries inside enclosure which remain energized, Annex G and H of IEC 60079-2 provide additional safety requirement.
The Ex marking is “Ex pyb IIC T4 Gb” without any Zone 2 markings that are used for internal components. Do you think a QAR with Zone 2 protection technique(s) is needed while the marking in IECEx CofC shows only EPL Gb?

Hazardous Area Classification HAC
Gases, vapours, mists and dusts can all form potentially explosive atmospheres with air.
Hazardous Area Classification (HAC) is used to identify places where, because of the potential for an explosive atmosphere, special precautions over sources of ignition are needed to prevent fires and explosions. Hazardous area classification should be carried out to identify places (or areas) where controls over ignition sources are needed and those places where they are not. Hazardous areas are further classified into Zones / Class & Divisions / Classes & Zones, which distinguish between places that have a high chance of an explosive atmosphere occurring and those places where an explosive atmosphere may only occur occasionally or in abnormal circumstances.
