T&D support Patchwork, a neighbourhood youth project set up in 2001 by local people. Patchwork is a charity (1157186) and a company limited by guarantee (8510835) based in Benwell in the west end of Newcastle Upon Tyne. Their aim is to improve the life chances of children and young people aged 5-25yrs in the local area. Local people continue to manage and oversee the project.
Helping and educating young people is at the heart of Patchwork’s objectives including those who are involved in the criminal justice system or at risk of becoming involved in the criminal justice system without distinction of sex, sexual orientation, race or political, religious or other opinion.
Through their leisure time activities Patchwork helps to develop their physical, mental and spiritual capacities so they grow into full maturity as individuals with improved life conditions and reaching their full potential.
âž¡ For more information on the Patchwork Project and how you can get involved, see the contact details below or visit their Facebook page hereÂ
Visibility – Simply being seen; and being directly accessible to young people in their communities, with the least possible barriers of organisation
Accountability – From our Trustees to our users; an openness and transparency of the work
Investment – In addition to skill and knowledge based investments we aim to create an atmosphere in which people involved in the work will leave feeling they have taken from it or or added to it
The way Patchwork put these into practice is through the following:
Staff Training – The trustees believe that good quality staff are essential to do the job- all youth work staff are at least NVQ3 qualified
Policies and Procedures to keep you safe – Policies and procedures are reviewed and updated annually. All staff and adult volunteers are DBS checked and undertake safeguarding training with Newcastle City Council safeguarding board
Our Confidentiality Statement – As an organisation Patchwork provides a confidential service to all who are accessing its services. All young people using Patchwork have the right not to have any information shared outside the project. This means that what you tell us will not leave the project – unless you or someone else is at risk of serious harm. If we ever have to tell someone what you’ve told us, we would aim to talk to you about this first
The Right to Complain – We welcome criticism and know there is always room for improvement
Indoor Climbing, Laser Quest & Ice Skating are just some of the activities that the Patchwork Project has facilitated for young people in 2022 so far
Pizza Making & Bike Rides are just some of the activities that young people in the west end of Newcastle can get involved in

Lfh ATEX Heater Successfully Trialed At MOD Facility
Working in partnership with leading hire company ESS VPPLC , Thorne & Derrick were invited to an MOD facility to conduct a demonstration and trial of the LFH ATEX certified heater.
The client reached out to T&D as they required a temporary ATEX heating solution to help improve the curing times of paint coatings. They were experiencing some issues with their current heaters on site which were found to be cycling hot and cold, meaning that the paint was not drying effectively.
Thorne & Derrick attended site and provided a product demonstration of the LFH Fan Heater to key stakeholders. The demo and trial proved successful: the client’s representatives were impressed with the performance of the heaters and the improvements it made to curing times.
ESS worked with Thorne & Derrick to add a range of LFH heaters to their hire fleet which were delivered within 48 hours. The client is now using several heaters on site.
The LFH and MFH Hazardous Area Heaters are now available for hire via our trusted and approved hire partners.
With a space-saving and energy-efficient heater design, The MFH and LFH fan assisted heaters can both deliver a powerful stream of warm air that can be felt several meters away, even in ambient temperatures as low as -40°C. The heaters are additionally certified to BS EN ISO 80079-36:2016 and BS EN ISO 80079-37:2016 standards for constructional safety, and are suitable for use in both onshore and offshore environments.
Thorne & Derrick have supplied a school with a heater and thermostat to heat a small chemical store. A range of chemicals were present on site which meant that a product suitable for use in hazardous areas was required.
The FAW stainless steel hazardous area air warmers provide a versatile, compact air warming solution for small work and storage areas. The range is certified for use in hazardous areas where the atmosphere is classified as a Zone 1 or 2 (IIA, IIB, IIC) gas group, and is certified to Ex e standard for increased safety.

FPSO capable of carrying 2 million barrels explodes off coast of Nigeria
Date: 2nd to 3rd February, 2022 Location: Offshore, Nigeria Vessel: Trinity Spirit Company: Shebah Exploration & Production Company Ltd (SEPCOL). Vessel Details: Built in 1976, carrying capacity of 274,774 Dead Weight Tonnage (DWT). 337 meters long and 54.5 meters wide.
A production and storage vessel which can hold up to two million barrels of oil has exploded off the coast of Nigeria with 10 crew members on board. The FPSO Trinity Spirit was situated near Warri in southern Nigeria when it burst into flames.
At least three people have reportedly died while four are still missing following the explosion.
While it is not yet clear how much oil will be spilled by the Trinity Spirit, commentators have warned Nigeria was now facing its second environmental disaster in three months after a huge oil spill from a disused, capped well head released 20,000 barrels of oil a day for a month into the waterways of Nembe, in Nigeria’s Bayelsa state.
This dramatic video shows the ship on fire with thick black smoke rising into the sky as it appears to be sinking.
Terminology Explained
Every industry has its own language, terms and acronyms. Below is a selection of the common terms in use in the Explosion industry today and how they are employed in current directives.
This month’s selections focus on IP ratings:
IP 65 – IP rated as “dust tight” and protected against water projected from a nozzle.
IP 66 – IP rated as “dust tight” and protected against heavy seas or powerful jets of water.
IP 67 – IP rated as “dust tight” and protected against immersion. for 30 minutes at depths 150mm – 1000mm
IP 68 – IP rated as “dust tight” and protected against complete, continuous submersion in water.
The chart below demonstrated how an IP Rating is formed.
