In the Oil and Gas Industry the separation of oil from other components such as water and sand is essential for subsequent processing steps and is carried out in separators.
The quality of the oil can be affected if the exact measurement of the filling level and exact determination of the position of the interfaces between oil, water and sand isn’t accounted for correctly. The utilised separators increase profitability of the drilling platform by being extremely efficient.
VEGAFLEX 67 functions according to the guided microwave principle and is influenced neither by process pressure nor medium temperature. Its sealing concept with an integrated “second line of defense” increases plant safety and reliability. Its application range of +400 °C and +400 bar and independence from the density of the medium allow universal deployment and guarantee high reproducibility in the oil separator.
With its robust, 16 mm-diameter rod probe, it is easy to mount directly in the container as well as inside bypass pipes. Moreover, it can be shortened, which allows simple, individual adaptation to the respective container dimensions.
As a result of their different densities, the various components separate mechanically from each other in the separator. To ensure optimal plant utilization, the position of the individual separation layers must be determined.
Radiation is attenuated to different degrees by different mediums. This physical principle is used to measure the separated layers of vapour, oil, water and sand. SoliTrac 31 measures right through the metallic container wall and is thus totally independent of the pressure and temperature in the separator.
Due to its high reliability and maintenance free operation, SoliTrac is also often used as a redundant measuring system in separators.
The pressure transmitter VEGABAR 53 reliably safeguards the entire separator from the danger of excessive process pressure. Its measuring cell is maintenance-free and measures process pressures up to +1000 bar.

Crude oil is decomposed into individual distillation products and is heated up to 400°C and fed into distillation columns. Pressure monitoring in the column and level measurement in the extraction vessels both occur but the most important controlled variable is temperature measurement for regulating distillation.
In the distillation column, it is not uncommon for water to appear under the mineral oil product. It often accumulates in the lower area of the reference vessel and must be pumped out from time to time so that it doesn’t pollute the distillate. VEGAFLEX 67 is mounted on the existing reference vessel (bypass) without any alterations being necessary.
The instrument continuously registers both the total level and the height of the water layer without the bypass having to be completely filled. The process temperature can be up to 400 °C and the pressure up to 400 bar. Neither lateral inlets, welded seams nor buildup or corrosion in the tube have any effect on the guided microwave measurement.
An important value to monitor in the distillation process is the top pressure at the upper end of the column. Depending on the type of distillation, the systems operate under vacuum or extremely high pressures. The pressure transmitter VEGABAR 61 with its wide temperature range is particularly suited for this application – even extreme temperature fluctuations during the start-up phase in the column do not cause it any problems.
The sensor version with isolator can even be implemented in temperatures up to 400°C.
Guided microwave technology is an interesting alternative to displacer systems in the reference vessels of the distillation column. The rod version of VEGAFLEX 66 forms together with the tube of the reference vessel an ideal signal guidance system. Its high functional reliability and availability encompasses everything from the actual detection of levels to the process fitting.
The measurement is independent of temperature, pressure or changes in density of the measured medium. Deposits or welded seams on the wall of the reference vessel or buildup on the rod probe also do not influence the measurement. The process temperature can be up to 400 °C and the pressure up to 400 bar.

The most important element in the production of pharmaceutical products is the reactor. Heat is added and the basic products are mixed with solvents to create a reaction. The process has continuous changes in the consistency of the medium, temperature and pressure.
A turbulent surface and thick foam is created as agitators in the vessel mix products together. The level in the reaction vessel must be continuously monitored to ensure the process is reliable and accurate.
Completely unaffected by internal installations, such as agitators or heating coils, VEGADIF 65 measures the level in the reaction vessel via the differential pressure. It detects the exact level even if there is intense foam generation. The built-on chemical seals allow the sensor to be used in process temperatures up to +400 °C.
The vibrating level switch VEGASWING 63 is well-suited to protect the reactor from overfilling or the connected pumps from running dry. It detects the limit level of different, even highly viscous media in temperatures up to +250 °C and pressures up to +64 bar. Its enamelled version provides maximum chemical resistance.
