Content Measurement & Overfill Protection In Cement Storage Silos
The clinker is mixed with additives after being ground into cement powder in the ball mill and is stored in storage or silos. How the material is transported is dependent on the volume of silo and the different silo dimensions. Common methods of transport are ship, truck or train.
VEGAPULS 68 & VEGAFLEX 62 Content Measurement In Cement Storage Silos
The VEGAPULS 68 radar sensor is used especially in large storage silos that are sometimes built up in segments. Its excellent signal focusing ensures a reliable function without interference from the silo walls, even in conjunction with these very large measuring ranges.
For silos with average dimensions up to 30 m (98 ft), the guided microwave VEGAFLEX 62 is the robust and reliable solution. The strong cable of the guided microwave sensor withstands tensile forces up to 3 tons and is thus applicable for measuring heavy bulk solids like cement. The sensor delivers reliable measurement data regardless of the composition of the cement.
VEGAWAVE 62 As Overfill Protection
The vibrating level switch VEGAWAVE 62 provides for reliable, wear and maintenance-free level detection. Its robust tuning fork guarantees a positive switching function for the full or empty signal, even under conditions of heavy build up in the silo.

VEGA PROTRAC Radiation Based Level Measurement
Application Details
High activity radiation sources are used to penetrate through the process vessels when using a radiation source for NDT (Non Destructive Testing) for tower scans and site radiography.
The radiation source is able to have an impact on the operation of any close by nucleonic level systems.
If the operation is affected the output can be decreased by the increased radiation present at the detector for example sending incorrect information about process conditions and influencing the control loop or a measured value potentially passing through an alarm or tip point.

Application

Vessel

Environment

The Solution
VEGA has created the PROTRAC range which is software dedicated for monitoring background radiation change.
Every PROTRAC detector also provides protection against unnecessary shutdowns due to false trips. The level of protection can be changed and increased if necessary by using a dedicated external detector.
Radiation Based Level Measurement – The Measuring Principal
In radiometric, i.e. radiation-based, level measurement, the measuring device is mounted outside the tank. A cesium-137 or cobalt-60 isotope sends out focussed gamma rays.
On the opposite side of the tank, a sensor picks up the gamma rays that have been attenuated by the medium. The level can be calculated via the intensity of incoming radiation.
Application Areas of PROTRAC
- Continuous level measurement
- Density and concentration measurement
- Point level detection
- Interface measurement
- Mass flow measurement of bulk solids on conveyor belts or in screw feeders
- Flow-rate measurement of liquids

VEGAPULS 68 Non-Contact Radar Transmitter
Application
Power station in Belgium with a plant where the boiler is powered with wood pellets alongside the coal fired stations. CO2-neutral fuel arrives by ship and is transported by conveyor belts to the warehouse. The pellets must be stored as dry as possible to retain maximum calorific value and avoid self-ignition by biodegradation.
Transporting the wood pellets produces excessive dust and filling noise which can reduce visibility in the area. A continuous and reliable filling level measurement is essential for the constant supply of biomass fuel.
Compared with coal, wood pellets are lighter, have a lower calorific value and they degrade more quickly, so they need to be used in their optimum condition. Thus a continuous turnover of product by perfectly controlled supply logistics, storage and handling are especially important. A reliable filling level measurement technology is a key part to this.

Solution
Two dust ATEX approved VEGAPULS 68 radar sensors are mounted on the conveyor car. VEGAPULS 68 level sensor reliably measures the filling height in the warehouse without contact and control the moving conveyor position. Heavy dust and deposits, abrasion and filling noise have no influence on the level measurement.
The reliability of this measurement enables the conveyor to fill the warehouse fully automatically without the need for supervision by an operator. The VEGAPULS 68 has two radar signals which have no influence on each other.
VEGAPULS 68 radar level sensor also supply the necessary information about the free storage capacities to the unloading rig at the pier as well as the available stocks for optimisation of the fuel supply to the power station control centre. This ensures there is always a supply of wood pellets to the power station.

VEGAPULS WL 61 Radar Level Sensor
Do you need to measure the level of water & sewage water this winter but are worried how the heavy rain will affect the process? VEGA’s VEGAPULS WL 61 radar level sensor maybe the answer.
Application – VEGAPULS WL 61
Several underground overflow basins are operated by a municipal wastewater association. They have been designed for combined storm water and sanitary sewage handling especially during heavy rain. An overflow leads to surface waters and there is a drain leading to the treatment plant.
The gates of the sewer network must be intelligently controlled to ensure accurate and reliable readings of the levels in the individual basins can be read. This system must be easy to install and maintenance-free.

VEGAPULS WL 61
Solution – VEGAPULS WL 61
VEGAPULS WL 61 radar level sensor is the ideal solution for this particular application and is specifically recommended for use in the water management industry such as overflow basins and pump shafts. The direct cable outlet and IP68 high protection rating allow submersion into water without affecting the operation. The VEGAPULS WL61 can be mounted horizontally on the wall or ceiling.
With this solution the gates can be controlled according to demand and the storage volume of the retention basin thus optimally used. The flange wall mounting makes the VEGAPULS WL 61 radar level sensor easily accessible for service purposes at any time.
VEGAPULS WL61 Radar Level Sensor – Advantages
- Non-contact measurement
- Wear and maintenance-free
- Exact measuring results independent of product, process and ambient condition

Winter Is Fast Approaching – Accurate Level Measurement In Salt Silos
VEGAPULS 67 Radar Level Sensor – Application
Conditions on the roads can be treacherous during the winter months making the work by winter road maintenance crews vital for motorists and pedestrians alike. Winter road maintenance helps to keep motorways, paths and public areas free of snow and ice. In particularly bad weather this service requires several hundred tons of road salt.
Storage of the salt is in wooden silos and from there filled into snowploughs. Levels in the silos are measured by hand daily to determine the amount of salt in reserve. This meant additional work for the staff, outdoor measurements at low temperatures, measurement errors and bottlenecks due to late ordering.
An automatic level measuring system was requested. The measurements should be displayed locally and transmitted to the depot building without incurring any additional installation costs. The solution will need to be able to withstand weathering (outdoor installation), deal with an aggressive medium and be able to function 50m away from the depot building.
VEGAPULS 67 Radar Level Sensor – Solution
VEGAPULS 67 radar level sensor measures the level in the salt silos continuously and wirelessly without touching the medium. The winter road maintenance crew therefore have accurate readings and measuring system that requires minimal maintenance.
VEGAPULS 67 radar level sensor’s fully encapsulated antenna system of plastic protects the sensor optimally against salt deposits and the corrosive atmosphere of the silo. The VEGAPULS 67 therefore makes better use of staff resources and aids increased availability of winter services.
The VEGAPULS 67 radar level sensor can be used as a simple solution for the measurement of bulk solids in a number of industries including steelmaking in the construction industry, the food industry as well as in plastic processing.
