Winter Is Fast Approaching – Accurate Level Measurement In Salt Silos
VEGAPULS 67 Radar Level Sensor – Application
Conditions on the roads can be treacherous during the winter months making the work by winter road maintenance crews vital for motorists and pedestrians alike. Winter road maintenance helps to keep motorways, paths and public areas free of snow and ice. In particularly bad weather this service requires several hundred tons of road salt.
Storage of the salt is in wooden silos and from there filled into snowploughs. Levels in the silos are measured by hand daily to determine the amount of salt in reserve. This meant additional work for the staff, outdoor measurements at low temperatures, measurement errors and bottlenecks due to late ordering.
An automatic level measuring system was requested. The measurements should be displayed locally and transmitted to the depot building without incurring any additional installation costs. The solution will need to be able to withstand weathering (outdoor installation), deal with an aggressive medium and be able to function 50m away from the depot building.
VEGAPULS 67 Radar Level Sensor – Solution
VEGAPULS 67 radar level sensor measures the level in the salt silos continuously and wirelessly without touching the medium. The winter road maintenance crew therefore have accurate readings and measuring system that requires minimal maintenance.
VEGAPULS 67 radar level sensor’s fully encapsulated antenna system of plastic protects the sensor optimally against salt deposits and the corrosive atmosphere of the silo. The VEGAPULS 67 therefore makes better use of staff resources and aids increased availability of winter services.
The VEGAPULS 67 radar level sensor can be used as a simple solution for the measurement of bulk solids in a number of industries including steelmaking in the construction industry, the food industry as well as in plastic processing.
