Thorne & Derrick International, The Leaders in ATEX Innovation, have recently supplied ATEX certified magnetic locks (Maglocks) to a global leading chemical manufacturing company in the North East of England.
Electronic
The client is building a new laboratory and R&D facility which will contain and store explosive gas mixtures. As part of the security and access control system, the client wanted the ability to restrict access to the area electronically. This prevents unauthorised personnel from entering the restricted area and also communicates to site DCS so that the client has instant visibility on who is in the explosive atmosphere area in the event of an emergency.
As part of the access control solution located in the hazardous area, Thorne & Derrick also provided ATEX certified Exit pushbuttons and breakglass in case of emergency.
Secure
The Maglocks manufactured by SecurEx was specified and preferred as it provided the client with an access control solution and security solution in one combined unit.
Unlike ATEX door contacts, the Maglock has a far superior holding force of 500KgN and can therefore be used as a security solution. The lock is also available with Grade 3 TEOL contacts which adds anti-tamper function if required.
Thorne & Derrick International, based in the UK, recently signed a Sole UK Distributor Agreementwith regional exclusivity to the North East of England for the SecurEx range of ATEX & IECEx Certified access control and security products.
Thorne & Derrick are leaders in the development and distribution of Product Innovations that deliver significant improvements to clients plant, people and operational safety in the explosive atmosphere industries.

The reduced heat loss also means fewer heaters or lower KW rated electric heaters in new builds. This reduces capital costs and reduces operating costs.
The Thorne & Derrick Sales Team have undergone extensive commercial and technical training at the Dynaco Academy in Belgium to support clients requirements.
“Thorne & Derrick International provide excellent coverage with the technical expertise to successfully spearhead our drive into the UK market – they are highly respected with blue-chip clients in our key sectors and we look forward to supporting them with the introduction of our ATEX certified doors to their customers,” comments Yves Degroote.
Thorne & Derrick were first introduced to Dynaco during 2018 Hazardex Exhibition and were impressed with the product.
Terry McDonald stated “The Dynaco high speed ATEX door is an innovative product which serves a niche application. Whilst there are many companies who specialise in high speed doors, none have any experience working in explosive atmospheres and such companies are unfamiliar with the strict regulations. The Dynaco ethos for safety, innovation and quality is perfectly aligned to T&Ds own strategy and I believe we can highlight a major safety issue to anyone already using such doors in an explosive atmosphere. Further, we can help end users become compliant by supplying a 3rd party certified product. For any clients wishing to install ATEX high speed doors, they can be safe in the knowledge that they will be using the safest door currently available on the market.”

Dynaco
Dynaco are part of the Entrematic Group who are one of the world’s leading manufacturers of entrance automation equipment.
Dynaco specialise in high performing industrial flexible doors. Since 1987, from their manufacturing facility in Belgium, Dynaco have supplied over 170,000 doors worldwide.
Their reputation for innovation, quality and reliability is second to none and today they produce over 15,000 doors per year.
As part of their drive for innovation, Dynaco have developed the worlds first ATEX certified high speed door. Like many other door manufacturers, Dynaco were asked for an ATEX solution for use in explosive atmospheres. Unlike their competitors who were happy to supply their normal door with an ATEX motor, Dynaco were not. They rightly decided this was non-compliant with ATEX regulations and a huge safety issue for end users.
Dynaco have developed a door which utilises an ATEX motor and electrical components.
The ATEX doors are also made from non-sparking materials and anti-static PVC.
They did not stop there.
The Dynaco door is product certified by a 3rd party notified body. Each and every door is inspected prior to it leaving the factory.
If you require a door for explosive atmospheres, there is not a safer high speed door available.
Dynaco was founded by Benoit Coenraets, the inventor of the flexible roll-up door. In 2015 Dynaco launched their S-5 Atex Door.

Why did you choose to study an apprenticeship?
I chose to study an apprenticeship as an alternative to continuing with my University studies to enable me to get into work and gain valuable experience I would not have gained otherwise at University.
What do you enjoy most about your apprenticeship and how does it compare to traditional study?
I enjoyed my apprenticeship as it allowed me to gain valuable workplace experience within the real world and taught me skills that I may not have otherwise learnt or got to improve via University. Apprenticeship programmes have enabled me to work full time along traditional studying to pass my qualification which has meant I have had to make no decisions between one or the other.
What would you like to do after your apprenticeship?
I completed my apprenticeship in March 2019 and proceeded to move to a full time position at Thorne & Derrick.
How have you found the support from Northern Skills Group during your apprenticeship?
My tutor Amanda was great throughout my entire apprenticeship from start to finish. She laid on additional visits to my workplace to support me when things got difficult and helped me to complete my apprenticeship programme, gain my qualification and receive a full time position at Thorne & Derrick.

Career Searching…
Why did you choose to study an apprenticeship?
I chose to do an apprenticeship because I am looking for a career and I believe an apprenticeship provides the best opportunity for this due to the support provided. I learn at my best by putting theory into practice, and an apprenticeship includes doing both therefore by the end of the apprenticeship I will be comfortable to do the job independently which is my end goal.
What do you enjoy most about your apprenticeship and how does it compare to traditional study?
Slightly more laid back and puts me in a position to be independent of my own work load, enforced by use of Smart Assessor where I can track progress on assignments.
What would you like to do after your apprenticeship?
To go full time at Thorne and Derrick and pursue a career as a Sales Engineer.

Earning While Learning….
Why did you choose to study an apprenticeship?
The reason I chose to study an apprenticeship is I can learn whilst starting a new a career. I receive off and on the job training and attend college fortnightly.
What do you enjoy most about your apprenticeship and how does it compare to traditional study?
The one thing I enjoy the most about my apprenticeship is the full time employment of Monday to Friday. It is more beneficial than traditional study as means you start working at an earlier age than some might.
What would you like to do after your apprenticeship?
After I have completed my apprenticeship I hope to continue my career within the industry.
How have you found the support from Northern Skills Group during your apprenticeship?
The support from Northern Skills has been excellent and very helpful.

“It is the best decision I have made”
I chose to study an apprenticeship as I am ambitious and wanted the opportunity to develop
my skills into a professional career. Having previously experienced various forms of study and part-time jobs, none of which have advanced further, I decided to step out of my comfort zone and enter into an apprenticeship. It is the best decision I have made. What I enjoy the most about my apprenticeship is my supportive colleagues and the ability to be myself.
I love my role because everyday I get to do what I enjoy, and a lot of the work entails my personal hobbies. I have learned that apprenticeships are flexible and are great for someone who wants to combine a full-time role with study and continuously develop new skills.
Thorne & Derrick, Northern Skills Group and Just Williams Ltd are members of NEPIC – award winning organisation working with the chemical-using industries in the North East of England.
My job is full of amazing opportunities and I feel that I am in the right place to grow my career – something which I feel does not compare to traditional study. The hands-on experience to support my studies is a fantastic aspect of my apprenticeship and helps me to learn and grow both professionally and as a person.
After my apprenticeship I hope to advance into a higher-level course while staying on in employment with my company. I thoroughly enjoy my role and the day to day variety of tasks and I am excited to grow with the company and progress in my Marketing career.
I have found Northern Skills to be very supportive with my apprenticeship through mentor visits and flexible learning time. The continuous support is unbeatable. #BlazeATrail.

“I thought the training provided was excellent. Content was relevant to those involved and delivery was enthusiastic, professional and enjoyable. Jessica is obviously very passionate and knowledgeable about sales. Having the sales training provided in house meant that it could be easily related to our day-day sales activities and the markets in which we operate. I have attended external sales training courses in the past and always found them to be too generic and somewhat outdated. It was great to see high levels of engagement from all Thorne & Derrick staff in attendance. I think this is as good a barometer as any on the quality of the training provided. I would certainly recommend Just Williams to other companies wishing to help develop sales skills. Thank you sincerely for your time and effort.” Terry McDonald, Business Development Manager with Thorne & Derrick
Some words from some of our Sales & Marketing Apprentices
Thomas Heron
I thought the training was really good and engaging. It covered topics which I believe will be of huge benefit to me as I set out on my career path to becoming a Sales Engineer.
KYC was of particular interest and helped to enforce the importance of this if I am to become a successful sales person.
Laura McCabe
I found the sales training to be very useful. It was good to reflect on strengths and weaknesses and I found the topic on Halo effect to be of particular interest.
The training has helped to reinforce the importance of speaking to customers and not relying on e-mails which is an easy habit to slip into and one I have been guilty of. I am keen to put the training into action and see the results.
Megan Atkinson
Within marketing, the importance of sales knowledge is often overlooked. I found the training extremely useful and more applicable to my role than I initially thought.
I learned about my strengths and weaknesses and now understand the steps needed to progress. The sections of the training about ‘Know Your Customer’ and ‘The Halo Effect’ were very interesting and have now transformed the way I look at my marketing.
With this knowledge, I believe that our online presence as a company will be vastly improved.
