SPARTAN Linear Generation II

Hazardous Area Lighting

Generation II

Last week Thorne & Derrick alongside UK manufacturer of hazardous area lighting Raytec presented a webinar around their their widely anticipated second generation of SPARTAN Linear Generation II stocked and distributed by Thorne & Derrick.

The webinar covers all the new features, analyses performance upgrades, explains certification standards and the new variants Raytec can offer.

Special thanks to Callum Ryder Marketing Manager at Raytec for delivering the webinar and hosting the Q&A discussing the latest changes to their linear lighting range.

SPARTAN Linear Generation II

Below is a transcript of the Q&A section that took place at the end of the webinar.

Q1 Are the screws captive to the lens sealing plate?

A1 I think what you mean there is can the screws be removed. To answer the questions you can remove the lens without fully removing the screws. So if you are operating from a height it is possible to remove the lens without the screws falling out. It is also possible to remove them completely if you need to exchange or replace the lens. So in short you can completely remove or retain the screws with the lens remaining in place.

Q2 What is the T-Class Rating?

A2 T4 as standard but please contact Thorne & Derrick if you have any other requirements.

Q2 How often do you need to replace the battery in the emergency light fitting?

All Raytec products are covered by a 5 year warranty. Only exclusion of that is the battery as it is seen as a consumable part. All batteries have a 1 year warranty as standard. We would expect them to last longer than that depending on how they are used.

Q3 In emergency lighting, the battery type and location inside the fittings shall be shown?

A3 The battery used in the SPARTAN linear is a Ni/Cd and is housed within the end cap of the luminaire.  It is located here so the battery is very easy to maintain (only two screws to remove).

Q4 Is there any specific area you feel that the Gen II Linear fittings surpass market competitors?

A4 As I mentioned during the presentation we feel the power and the efficacy of the SPARTAN Linear is industry leading which is a big improvement for the GEN I existing version. The choice of optics means we can target light for specific applications and have increases light output where required.

Q5 Could you explain more about the new optics?

A5 120×120 circular beam as standard which is ideally suited for the majority of applications. 9090,6060 & 3030 options available. Elliptical (80×30) options also available with the ability to rotate the optics (30×80) so it can be tailored to each application. Wide beam which throws all light out to the side and is used on the safety shower variant, street light.

Q6 Does the range have the option of a diffuser?

A6 Yes, diffused and double diffused options available. Can be pre-fitted or also available to retrofit in the field. Easy maintenance.

Q7 How is the product more resistant to chemical attack?

A7 The existing Linear had a polycarbonate lens which screwed directly into the fitting. These screw holes were high stress point, and more prone to cracking if exposed to certain chemicals. Gen II uses a solid peace of polycarbonate which is clamped to the luminaire (without any screw holes and therefore no stress points). It also uses a higher grade of polycarbonate.

Substations – What’s the risk?

Thorne & Derrick have assisted with a number of ATEX requirements for substations & battery rooms to provide safe heating, lighting and power distribution where required.

UK DNO’s detail safe working procedures and rules in their Document Manuals to be followed when working on alkaline or acid substation batteries and storage rooms located within primary network medium/high voltage substations.

HV Substation

Lead-acid type batteries release potentially explosive hydrogen gas when charging – this is the primary explosive risk associated with medium/high voltage substations. Consequently, these worksite locations are classified as Hazardous Area Zones according to the ATEX Directive. The main dangers to personnel carrying out work or testing batteries and chargers are electric shock, explosion or burns arising from the ignition of flammable gas.

Hydrogen when mixed with oxygen, is a highly explosive substance that is odourless, colourless and lighter than air. Where effective ventilation is not in place, a build-up can occur. In extreme circumstances there have been cases of battery room explosions as a result of ineffective battery room ventilation.

Battery Rooms require ventilation and a maintained temperature range to optimise charge capacity, operating life and prevent against explosion. The likelihood of an explosion occurring in a battery room depends on the number of batteries, the charge rate, the size of the room and the ventilation available.

Thorne & Derrick provide ATEX Compliant electrical equipment, including ATEX Fans for Portable Ventilation in Hazardous Areas, to maintain the temperature of battery rooms and prohibit the built-up of hydrogen gas. We also provide heat loss calculations to ensure the correct heaters are specified and meet ATEX certification requirements, and lighting designs to ensure lighting is designed in line with regulations.

Terminology Explained

Every industry has its own language, terms and acronyms. Below is a selection of the common terms in use in the Explosion industry today and how they are employed in current directives.

Ex Specialists

This month’s selections focus on combustible dust/powder and KSt & Pmax characteristics.

KSt and Pmax are considered two of the most important parameters to characterize dust material combustibility. KSt provides insight into the rate of pressure increase during a dust explosion event. Pmax provides insight into the maximum achievable pressure generated during a dust explosion event.

Different powders can be compared with each other with respect to their explosion severity, and powders can be classified into groups, called St classes, as follows:

Powder Class Kst value [bar.m/s]
St0 0 Does not explode
St1 1 to 200 Weak explosion
St2 201 to 300 Strong explosion
St3 >300 Very strong explosion

Chemical Industry

Explosion proof Electrical Equipment

Chemical Industry

Thorne & Derrick International, based in the UK, are Experts in Equipment for Explosive Atmospheres & ATEX Product Innovation – we supply and distribute the Technor range of hazardous area explosion proof enclosures and protected electrical equipment which make it possible to safely use instruments, lights, motors and equipment requiring electric power in potentially explosive atmospheres and hazardous areas.

Technor is part of the Marechal Electrical Group, leading manufacturer of ATEX plugs and sockets for hazardous areas and explosive atmospheres.

In this blog we will focus on the chemical industry and importance of correctly selecting Explosion Proof Electrical Equipment that is able to withstand potentially corrosive atmospheres. Let’s start by understanding more about the chemical industry.

The chemical industry converts raw materials into 70,000 different products, and in each chemical sub-sector, we can find a huge variety of flammable substances such as:

  • Nitrogen & phosphorus the key nutrients of today’s fertilizers, used to promote plant growth and improve plant cell structure;
  • Solvents and additives (thickeners, biocides, antifreeze, etc.), used in the production of paints to obtain certain properties such as colour, viscosity, gloss and durability.
  • Natural gas, crude oil and chlorine or chlorinated organic substances, the main raw materials in the production of plastics, synthetic fibers and rubber.
  • Nitroglycerin, the primary component in explosives manufacturing.

A variety of legislation and regulations have been implemented in the chemical industry as a direct result of accidents — accidents that could have been avoided if companies had followed necessary safety precautions.

The production of dyes, paints, plastics, rubber, explosives, etc.… involves different processes, which may lead to the emission of hazardous or reactive gases. These gases can form combustible mixtures and, consequently, any source of ignition or spark can trigger the explosion process.

Explosion Proof Electrical Equipment For The Chemical Industry

Explosion Proof Electrical Equipment For The Chemical Industry

Hazards in Chemical Plants

One of the greatest hazards in chemical plants is the possibility of electrostatic discharge when handling dangerous chemicals. In this process, static electricity is generated by surface friction when chemicals are exposed to other materials.

Typically, this involves the product being moved or transferred through pipes, filters, mixers, pumps. Pumps, for example, play a critical role in the handling and transferring of dangerous chemicals, as they are used throughout the chemical supply chain to transfer chemicals from the pipeline or bulk tank, just to name a few applications. Avoiding electrostatic discharge starts with selecting the right equipment to transfer those chemicals

In bulk production, in particular, all these processes are automated and therefore require electrical power and related motors which need to meet ATEX &/ IECEx criteria.

Other processes applied in this sector include the mixing of substances, distillation, filtration, heating and cooling, solvent extraction, centrifugation and injection. All these processes may cause the release of flammable gases and vapours. As a result, even in this case a thorough selection of ATEX/IECEx equipment is mandatory in order to ensure people and environment protection.

Chemical injection systems, for instance, require an electrical control panel to be started and/or stopped. This panel needs to be ATEX/IECEx certified.

Selecting The Correct Equipment

In order to select the correct Ex-proof electrical equipment, it is vital to carry out an assessment of the plant hazards for the risk of explosion. This evaluation is performed considering the area in which a potentially explosive atmosphere may be present, the degree of protection that ATEX/IECEx equipment must ensure and, obviously, the necessary preventive measures to avoid ignition sources to be present during normal operation.

Combustible Dust Explosions | Reducing Risk & Managing Workplace

Reducing Risk

& Managing Workplace Safety

Do you work with industrial processes or manufacturing applications where there is a risk of explosion due to the presence of combustible dusts?

If so, you should be aware of the legal requirement to use correctly certified Hazardous Area Electrical & Lighting Equipment which is appropriate for use in these potentially explosive dust atmospheres and environments.

Dust explosions can have catastrophic consequences as the initial shock wave resulting from the explosion kicks up more dust triggering a chain reaction throughout the plant, often resulting in mass destruction to buildings and possible death or injury to employees.

A dust explosion requires 3 basic inputs: air, combustible dust and an ignition source such as an electrical spark or a hot surface – other factors that determine explosion intensity include particle size, cloud density or moisture content.

Both worker and workplace are at risk – specific legal requirements, namely Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (DSEAR), stipulate the obligation for systematic identification and control of ignition sources. DSEAR requires all workplaces where substances that could give rise to fire or explosion are handled or stored must be fully assessed and protected.

Here are some ignition risk processes:

  • Most solid organic materials (such as wood, flour, grass, paper and cereals)
  •  Many powdered metals (such as aluminium, magnesium and titanium)
  •  Certain non-metallic inorganic materials (although less common)

Selection of Equipment

Thorne & Derrick, Experts in Equipment for Explosive Atmospheres, specify, design and supply safe products to guarantee Light, Heat, Power & Ventilation in potentially combustible dust atmospheres. Combustible dust atmospheres are classified into hazardous area zones with associated equipment categories determined on the basis of the frequency and duration of the occurrence of an explosive atmosphere.

Zone 20 A place in which an explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of combustible dust in air is present continuously, or for long periods or frequently.

Zone 21 A place in which an explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of combustible dust in air is likely to occur in normal operation occasionally.

Zone 22 A place in which an explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of combustible dust in air is not likely to occur in normal operation but, if it does occur, will persist for a short period only.

We supply an extensive range of ATEX Dust Atmosphere Equipment:

Panels | Plugs | Isolators | Enclosures | Lighting | Control Stations | Motor Starters | Heat Trace | Gas Detection | Flame Detection | Process Instrumentation | Process Heating | Fans | Security Locking & Access Control | ATEX Enclosures

Customisation as Standard

Dust-like and powdered substances are either processed or a by-product of the production processes frequently found in the food and beverage industry. pose an ignition source or explosion hazard

Whether your plant and equipment requires defence against cold-weather impacts as part of a Winterisation System or general all-year-round process temperature or space heating requirements, we can help.

For instance in the food and beverage sector we can provide products to deliver assured and consistent heating for bulk stored products that can be at risk of crystallisation when subject to low ambient temperatures – viscosity maintenance, mixing separation of sensitive fluids, extraction and refining to provide accelerated heat-up. Recent applications include drums storing honey, corn sugar, palm oil and molasses.

Thorne & Derrick can innovate and custom-design flexible silicone heaters that can be applied to heat the most complex shapes, geometries, curves and pipes.

Portable & Temporary Heating

MFH ‘The Bulldog’

Designed for compactness and portability, the EXHEAT MFH Bulldog electric heater, provides localised and targeted heating where combustible dust explosion hazards stipulate the requirement for correctly ATEX certified heaters to meet the requirements of DSEAR: typical explosion hazard applications could include agricultural, carbonaceous, plastic, chemical and metal dusts.

EXHEAT MFH Bulldog

The Bulldog combines efficient design with simple functionality to provide a portable heating solution for use in hazardous environments where the atmosphere is classified as Zone 1/2 (IIB) or Zone 21/22 (IIIC) – Bulldog comes ready to ‘plug and play’ with the option of fitting a plug, or hard wiring to an isolator unit. The Bulldog heater can be used with or without ducting to provide a warm stream of air that can be felt metres away, even in ambient temperatures as low as -40°C and up to +40°C.

Biomass power is electricity generated using plant-based fuels – this can include wood pellets and wood chips, bioenergy crops or even agricultural and domestic waste. As a result, biomass is Britain’s second biggest source of renewable electricity. The Climate Change Committee believes sustainably sourced bioenergy could provide up to 15% of the UK’s primary energy by 2050, and has said that “sustainable bioenergy is essential for reaching Net Zero”. However, biomass is an inherently dangerous material possessing significant fire and explosion hazards. The increasing scale of biomass use brings several challenges, especially where the scale of installations significantly exceeds the scope of any previous installation in terms of size.

Compliance with current standards does not necessarily mean that the installation is “safe” and a risk based approach is required to ensure that the level of risk to personnel is reduced to a level that is As Low As Reasonably Practicable. Further detailed information about Fire and Explosion Hazards in the Biomass Industries can be found by downloading the Hazards 26 IchemE 2016 article here.
