ATEX Lighting FAQs
What is ATEX Lighting?
ATEX Lighting refers to specialised light fixtures designed for use in explosive atmospheres, where flammable gases, vapours or dust are present. Certified under the ATEX directive (94/9/EC), these luminaires prevent ignition risks by containing sparks, heat or arcs, ensuring safe illumination in hazardous areas such as oil refineries, chemical plants and underground tunnels.
What is ATEX?
ATEX is “ATmosphere EXplosible”
ATEX is the name for two European Directives than control explosive atmospheres. The first Directive 99/92/EC. It is also called ‘ATEX 137’ or the ‘ATEX Workplace Directive.’
This directive sets minimum requirements to improve health and safety for workers. It focuses on those at risk from explosive atmospheres in hazardous are industries, including the use of ATEX rated lighting.
Which ATEX Zone Do I Need? Atex Zone 1 Lighting vs Zone 2 ATEX Lighting
Zone 1 Hazardous Areas ➡ An area classified as hazardous due to its explosive atmosphere. This atmosphere is a mix of air and flammable substances. These substances can be in the form of gas, vapor, or mist. This situation may occasionally occur during normal operations.
Zone 2 Hazardous Areas ➡ A hazardous area zone where an explosive atmosphere may form. This atmosphere is a mix of air and flammable substances like gas, vapor, or mist. Typically, this situation does not occur. However, if it does, it would only be for a short period of time.
Overview of Hazardous Area Lights zone selection:
- Floodlights | Zone 1 & Zone 2
- Floodlights Crane | Zone 1 & Zone 2
- Light Fittings | Zone 1 & Zone 2
- Bulkheads | Zone 1 & Zone 2
- High Bay Lights | Zone 1 & Zone 2
- Handlamps
- Torches
- Headtorches
Hazardous areas are classified into zones based on the duration of an explosive atmosphere event.

Hazardous Area Floodlights Case Study
SPARTAN Floodlights where chosen and installed to provide explosion prooflighting. This lighting is for hazardous areas and workspaces on an offshore Jack-up drilling rig, which was brought in for maintenance in the Middle East.
The general lighting of this rig was important for safety and efficiency. This included ATEX Floodlights and LED lighting for access areas and walkways. All SPARTAN emergency lighting products manufactured by Raytec provide full light output for 1 hour. They have both IECEx and ATEX Certification.
