Abtech BPG GRP and SX stainless steel electrical enclosures and junction boxes are ATEX certified and suitable for Zone 1 and Zone 2 hazardous areas.
Abtech stainless steel (SX) and Abtech GRP (BPG)Â electrical enclosures provide unprecedented levels of fire resistance, thus assuring that safety critical systems such as Ex emergency lighting or fire safety controls keep their electrical integrity during severe events. This protection against intense heat is applicable to Abtech safe area and hazardous area enclosures.
Abtech have tested the maximum levels of fire resistance via a number of independent testing in accordance with the defined IEC and British Standards.
Junction Boxes & Enclosures
Both the SX stainless steel and BPG glass reinforced polyester (GRP) ranges successfully met the requirements for IEC331: 750 ºC for 3 hours and BS6387 part ‘C’: 950ºC for three hours. In both cases the electrical enclosure and its components were suitable to function at the end of the time period.
GRP fire resistant enclosures are highly resistant to contamination from oils, fats, aliphatic and aromatic carbohydrates, bacteria and enzymes. GRP enclosures can also be used for LSOH (low smoke zero halogen) applications.
In addition, the SX stainless range was also successfully tested to BS6387 part ‘Z’ (external impact) and part ‘W’ (water spray). In all cases the fire rated enclosures were fitted with suitably rated ceramic terminals.
This high level of fire resistance has led to Abtech electrical enclosures being selected on a number of key projects including the UK Channel and Tyne tunnels as well as major refinery projects such as Tengiz (TCO) in Kazakhstan.

Zone 1 LED Lighting For Gas & Dust Environments
Abtech has developed the capabilities of its Gamma range of LED luminaires which are now suitable for use in Zone 1 hazardous areas. Available for use in both gas and dust environments, the Abtech Gamma has specifically been designed to handle the harshness of operational oil and gas production.
The LED floodlight/lowbay suitable for use in Zone 1 gas and Zone 21 dust hazardous areas – fully ATEX and IECEx compliant. The Zone 1 flameproof floodlight use high output LED modules that are able to offer a bright and routinely uniform white light.
The Gamma is a 72W intrinsically safe LED Zone 1 luminaire providing around 10,000 lumens of crisp white light. The Zone 1 Gamma can be dangled so it appears as a lowbay luminaire or fitted as a traditional light fitting.
Abtech’s own innovation has aided the advancement of LED technology by developing their own iSMART driver technology given the GAMMA a step up on competitors.
Firstly, certification was achieved without the need for heavy Ex d enclosures (lighting manufacturers use this technique as a way of isolating unprotected LEDs from coming into contact with potentially explosive gasses)Â making the Gamma rather light in weight.
Zone 1 LED Floodlight Hazardous Area ATEX IECEx Ex i
With LED technology maintenance costs are significantly reduced as there is no need to annually test for any exposed flamepaths. Abtech’s iSMART driver technology eliminates the need to encapsulate the LED’s as the driver has a built in failsafe mechanism to prevent sparking.
Some have been known to become cloudy over time, particularly when exposed to the complex hydrocarbon compounds associated with oil and gas production. As the Gamma lighting doesn’t need to be encapsuled,the transfer of the light generated is maximised. The results are a very efficient 138lm/w and no decrease in lumen output through encapsulate degradation.
In line with its Zone 2 LED floodlight counterpart, the new Zone 1 version is built from marine grade stainless steel with a toughened glass diffuser and incorporates stainless steel fixings throughout. The luminaire is designed to operate within an ambient range of -30°C to +55°C (T3/T4) ensuring the luminaire can withstand the severe of environments.
All Gamma variants incorporate protection to EN61000-3-2 & EN61000-3-3. The control gear also features thermal cut off protection to maintain LED life. All Gamma lighting is tested at an operational ambient of 40°C and available with a five-year complete system warranty.

The Abtech Zone 2 LED Bulkhead exit sign is compact and lightweight and therefore ideal for heavy industrial applications including building, walkway and stairwell escape route signage.
Providing 100% light output instantaneously in emergency mode thanks to the integral battery back up the aluminium bulkhead can also run in maintained or non-maintained mode with functions such as fault indication and automatic battery monitoring.
Designed specifically for use in heavy industrial and marine environments to clearly identify escape routes.
Available with self-adhesive running man decals, the nD8611 is compliant with ISO 7010 and ASR A1.3 (Viewing distance = 22m).
A EN 60598 2-22 compliant version of the nD8611 is also available for use with central battery systems.

LED Fittings With ATEX Compliance
The ongoing benefits of LED hazardous area lighting in terms of cost of ownership and overall performance were critical factors taken in to consideration when the UK’s largest Steel producing company needed to upgrade their lighting due to regulation changes.
THE CHALLENGE
Petrel were asked to provide a detailed solution to the clients requirements of improved lighting efficiency, in terms of energy consumption, lumen performance, ongoing maintenance costs and compliance to ATEX directives for explosive atmospheres.
THE PROCESS
Petrel commenced a detailed survey of the site in conjunction with the client to establish the best possible solution in terms of product and installation method to minimise labour costs and potential disruption to the client’s 24/7 production operation.
THE SOLUTION
The solution was to supply products from the Petrel XN LED range which are rated at Zone 2 Ex Na This offered the client full protection and compliance as well as industry leading performance in terms of light output, energy efficiency and quality.
Petrel XN is a LED light fitting suitable for Zone 2 hazardous area lighting for use in gas and dust areas. Available in a range of sizes from 2-5ft with light output up to 10,000 Lumens.
The project was also time critical and Petrel were able to meet the tight and specific delivery criteria to ensure the project was completed during the clients planned shutdown periods that were outside normal working hours.

The client now enjoys vastly improved levels of light with a higher CRI as well as significant energy savings.
The areas concerned are now fully compliant in terms of the lighting installation.
In addition to this, maintenance costs have been vastly reduced as a result of using our XN LED products which have industry leading performance in terms of product life with our driver units and LED arrays rated at 50,000 hours life.
