lIGHTING Hazardous Areas

There is an international trend in the global hazardous area industry sector to upgrade conventional ATEX lighting to use energy-efficient LED lighting technology.

The specification and installation of LED lights, such as Raytec SPARTAN, will significantly reduce annual energy consumption and lower carbon emissions. The LED lights will also lower light pollution and reduce maintenance costs.

Reducing Your Carbon Footprint By Several Shoe Sizes

Furthermore, businesses are proactively aligning their hazardous area lighting upgrade with sustainability strategies to reduce carbon emissions and support ambitious carbon neutrality targets agreed by the EU in 2019 – the upgrade and investment in LED lighting by business in pursuit of zero emissions status by 2050 has led to several multinational companies to accelerate the replacement of now retrograde fluorescent type lights with modern-technology light-emitting diode (LED) light fittings.

In the drive to go green the fading glow of traditional light fittings is fastly being replaced by the brilliant “White Light” illumination of energy efficient, modern technology light-emitting diode (LED) lighting systems.

Lighting Design

Switching-off & Switching-out

We can help you Design your Lighting Scheme and here is how:

  • Full Site Modelling – a 3D design plan is used to provide you with a visual representation of what the final installed hazarodus area lighting solution with actually look like, demonstrating the lux levels and spread of light that will be achieved on scene.
  • Lighting Design Video – Thorne & Derrick and Raytec can produce video designs of your final lighting scheme. Providing a 3D walk-around offering a real life insight into how the installation will perform – from all angles.
  • Illuminance Mapping – 2D and 3D hazardous area lighting plans can also be provided in a pseudo colour view, providing illuminance mapping of the intensity and spread of the light output across the site. This is used to show that the area has been evenly illuminated which is crucial for achieving the highest level of safety and security.
  • Lighting Positions – Raytec lighting is highly targeted, providing only the right amount of light needed on scene for maximum efficiency and minimum waste. Plotting the beam direction shows the precise aiming point of each LED panel, the angle of elevation and exact position of each luminaire.

Hazardous Area Lighting

ATEX & DSEAR

The Maintenance, Inspection and Testing of Equipment for service in Explosive Atmospheres should be carried out by approved CompEx qualified engineers – Ex inspections develop a complete inventory of all installed ventilation equipment (the Ex register) accompanied by a separate report for each piece of equipment detailing its location, suitability for the hazardous area zone, Ex details and its operational condition.

Ex Inspections safeguard site safety to ensure client compliance with the ATEX Directive and their legal obligations under the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR).

Habitat Heating

Portable & Powerful Heating

Rapidly Raising Ambient Temperatures To Accelerate Processes

Habitats provide engineered protection to workers which control environments to achieve safe working conditions in explosive atmospheres and enable critical maintenance work on an oil or gas facility – this supports composite repairs and pipe wrapping to be carried out.

Today, aging asset infrastructure requires expensive maintenance, repair and asset life-extension programs which in turn requires compliant, efficient and cost-effective maintenance products to enable safe infrastructure repairs.

The safe space heating and air warming of habitats in explosive atmospheres using electric heaters improves worker comfort and productivity while accelerating the curing processes in onshore and offshore low temperature conditions.

Offshore Heaters

The Bulldog Heater is now currently being used on assets owned and operated by some of the largest international O&G companies including BP, Shell, Apache and Total.

Successful Offshore Trials

Following extensive North Sea trials and scrutiny by ATEX Compliance Inspectors the Bulldog Heater has been adopted by several oil and gas E&P companies and their fabric maintenance contractors due to reduced weight and compact design – the advanced portability assists mobility for ladder, scaffold and tower working reducing incident or accident risks.

The Bulldog Heater manufactured by EXHEAT and UK Distributed by Thorne & Derrick provides portable but powerful heating to warm-up the workspace and with ATEX & IECEx Certifications protects personnel working in hazardous areas where the potential presence of flammable hydrocarbon gases poses serious potential risk of explosion.

Consequently, Bulldog has received Offshore Inspection Release Notices for several projects and is now accepted as the industry standard temporary and portable electric heater for hazardous areas in the oil and gas sector.
