Zone 2 Street Lighting
SPARTAN Street offers industry-leading efficacy for both Zone 1 (143lm/W) and Zone 2 (154lm/W) variants. With a low power consumption of 53W, SPARTAN Street delivers significant energy savings and outstanding optical performance.
SPARTAN Street is not a repurposed luminaire. It is built specifically with street, road, and pathway applications in mind. Utilising a bespoke light engine, specifiers and lighting designers have access to a full range of street light optics to meet the specific needs of their application.
With an adjustable bracket that can be rotated 90°, SPARTAN Street can be fixed to any column, bracket or pole in a post-top or side arm configuration – allowing the light to be targeted effectively and precisely.
SPARTAN Street comes pre-glanded and terminated with an IPX9 gland, plus a 12M outdoor cable. It weighs only 6.5kg, saving installers time and cost during installation.
As standard, SPARTAN Street suits the UK standard for a 76mm pole. With reducers available for 60mm and 48mm poles, SPARTAN Street can also be installed for lighting projects globally.

Integrating supports children, young people and adults with disabilities, all of whom needed to take a holiday! All service users live in or are able to access the districts of Durham City and Chester-le-Street.
The charity annually work with around 90 children & young people and deliver over 10,000 activity hours during both term time and school holidays. They have just recently been on their first residential since Covid to Butlins thanks to the support of Thorne & Derrick International,
A group holiday of this nature offers the members a break from their regular routine and environment, but with the security of familiar adults in support to provide a range of experiences to meet individual needs.
For many members, this is a welcome break with friends; for some, it is their first time away from their families! For the families of the young people, this holiday provides welcome respite from their caring responsibilities. Whatever benefits this holiday brings, Integrating guarantee a happy, fun and engaging experience in a safe and supported environment, fostering friendships and positive relationships all week long!

The charity is overseen by a passionate Board of Trustees who meet monthly to discuss topics such as the general running and management of the charity, funding requirements, growth, contracts, safeguarding etc. whilst ensuring all of our policies and procedures are being followed correctly allowing the charity to be run safely and successfully. The Trustees are managed by our Chair Richard Taylor.
All of our general day to day operational responsibilities are shared amongst 2 full time staff members, 1 administrator, sessional staff and volunteers, all of whom go above and beyond their role requirements to achieve a high standard of care.

All staff at Thorne & Derrick would like to say a huge congratulations to one of our Customer Service Apprentices, Dylan, who has passed his Level 2 Customer Service Apprenticeship.
Dylan chose to study an apprenticeship to enable him to ‘learn on the job’ while embarking on his new adventure as a Sales Engineer with Thorne & Derrick. He felt an apprenticeship was the most suitable option for him and was more beneficial than traditional study as it would enable him to earn a wage and start his career at an earlier age.
Dylan started his role with us just over a year ago and is now an integral member of the sales team – performing well and settled into his job.
After completing the apprenticeship Dylan said:
“The Level 2 Customer Service apprenticeship has provided me with a basic yet insightful look into customer service and how it plays a big part within my sales role. I am keen to continue my professional development; with help from my manager and director, I am now embarking onto a Level 4 Sales Executive course which I feel is more closely linked to my job role and will cover all areas of my day to day tasks. With the constant support from above, I am able to continue my development within Thorne & Derrick and I am keen to continue on my path in sales.”

Thorne & Derrick have also welcomed a new sales apprentice this month! We are excited to have Chloe onboard with us to develop her skills and start her career in sales.
Following her highly predicted A-level grades, Chloe decided that an advanced apprenticeship was the best route of further education for her to combine study while working.

“From past experiences I have realised that there is only so much that can be learned through books. Further progression of knowledge and experience comes by implementing everything that I have learned into real life scenarios. I believe that being taught something which can then be used in a sales environment, is the most beneficial way of being able to learn and grow as an individual and most importantly a successful salesperson. For me personally, being able to combine these both by doing the Sales Executive Apprenticeship will be more beneficial and rewarding. It brings excitement to be able to work for Thorne and Derrick and gives a great amount of hope to becoming successful in the future.”
Dylan and Chloe are both going to be starting the brand new Level 4 Sales Executive Apprenticeship. As the first employees to undertake this apprenticeship in the company, they are looking forward to seeing what the course will offer and eager to develop further in their careers.
The course overviews a number of areas including Sales Planning & Preparation, Customer Engagement, Customer Analysis, Collaboration & Teamwork and Digital Skills. Apprentices will learn how to set effective sales targets, how to communicate and interpret customer information as well as delivering a positive customer experience and a high standard of service. The apprenticeship also involves learning how to complete accurate records and process sales using digital CRM systems, which are a vital part of the job at Thorne & Derrick.

Thorne & Derrick support Changing Relations with their Rabbits In Headlights Project. This will be a further development of the book, Sometimes it Hurts, but focused this time on developing a bank of creative tools around the stories to give professionals who work with children and young people a “way in” to a potentially tricky conversation.
A little more about the project in the words of Changing Relations Managing Director Lisa Davies.
In piloting our book in July 2021, young people told us they enjoyed the content and felt that it “100% should be delivered to schools and to training teachers.”
Our writer, Bridget Hamilton worked together with children and young people from Creative Youth Opportunities who shared a range of experiences, from neglect and poverty to conflictual parental divorce and domestic abuse. The young people shared ways in which different adults responded to them, and, whilst some are responding with empathy and engagement, creating space to hold the difficulty of some young people’s home lives, unfortunately this was not the experience of all of our young people.
And the image of Alfie really stuck with us: a young lad holding a set of challenging experiences, realising that the adult he was faced with at school could see a hint of that challenge, but was not able to hold a space to bring it into the open. What message would Alfie take from this encounter? That his circumstances were too much for a grown up to handle? How would this make him feel?
We know from our work with tricky themes over the last 10 years that a feeling of shame emerges when young people sense that their experience can’t be discussed. But this isn’t Alfie’s shame. And what we’d love is for him to know it’s not his fault, it’s not just him, and he doesn’t have to bear the weight of his experiences alone.
Those whose experiences shaped the stories of our book told us: “It makes you feel like you’re not the only one when you go through it.” and “It could make people understand and be more kind.”
We know – and are grateful – that specialist services exist to support children and young people. We’re also very conscious that these services are only for young people referred into them. There can be a waiting list and educational professionals may face young people presenting with difficulty in the here and now, before the young people they are supporting are able to access specialist support. We also know that without domestic abuse necessarily being talked about openly, young people might not immediately identify themselves as experiencing this, or in need of support. For example, in writing the foreword to our book, award-winning campaigners Luke and Ryan Hart, who themselves experienced domestic abuse as children, shared that:
“We believed our emotional pain meant we were weak kids, rather than that something was wrong in our home…we felt we should have been able to cope…that it wasn’t dramatic enough to bother others with. We needed to hear others’ stories of domestic abuse before we could begin to make sense of our own. This awareness will spark conversations that help young people connect the dots…and get the help they need. We’re always asked when’s the right time to talk to children about domestic abuse and the answer is as soon as possible.”
In a review of our book, Lancet Child and Adolescent Health cites that “In the UK, 1 in 7 young people have been affected by domestic abuse at some point during their childhood, but they rarely have opportunities to discuss their experiences.”
This is where our new project development comes in. We’re absolutely delighted to have developed a partnership with Durham University social work lecturer, Dr Nikki Rutter, to support us in shaping tools, training and resources to empower teachers to open much-needed conversations with children & young people. It’s hugely important that we continue the principle of foregrounding children and young people’s voices in shaping resources aimed at supporting them. We’ll be working with schools and community partners across Bishop Auckland, Newton Aycliffe and Shildon to recruit a group of young people to be our YOUTH CREATIVE ACTION GROUP to support the new phase of development. They would create the brief for our illustrator Tamsin Rees and plan the creative activities they think would help their peers navigate the stories.

This is a really timely project as the domestic abuse bill that passed through parliament during the pandemic made children and young people “victims of domestic abuse within their own right.” Now is the time to acknowledge this; to overcome our discomfort in bringing this difficult topic into the open; and to widen the pool of those ready to reach out, signpost young people to specialist support and offer supportive conversations whilst they await referrals for that support.
