Walkway Lighting | Explosion Proof Lighting for Hazardous Areas
Explosion Proof Lighting
Ensure Optimal and Uniform Light Dispersion With Explosion Protection Concept
Thorne & Derrick International, based in the UK, can design and supply IECEx and ATEX compliant hazardous area lighting systems for the oil, gas and petrochemical industries – in this article we review the application and specification of explosion proof lighting for walkway applications using Appleton manufactured light fittings.
Appleton ATX FELED hazardous area lighting can be used in onshore and offshore lighting applications where the end user would have specified explosion proof lighting using linear fluorescent type light fittings.
ATEX certified walkway lighting is a common application in hazardous area industries: these heavily trafficked areas must be illuminated evenly, safely and
sufficiently to ensure safe passage with regard to changes of direction, level, stairs or any obstructions.
Vertical illumination is an important lighting system consideration in process areas that require monitoring of instrumentation.
Walkway lighting must also be designed with adequate overhead clearance for safe passage of people and equipment. In the event of a power disruption, an emergency backup system provides for safe escape.
The FELED Series of hazardous area lighting manufactured by Appleton ATX provide end users and installers:
- A wide range of lumen outputs – exceeding the output of FE Series fluorescent lighting
- Pole and other mounting options to suit any walkway configuration and luminaire height
- A low profile design to maximize headroom even in confined spaces
- Rugged, corrosion resistant durability to withstand harsh offshore environments
- A 3-hour emergency version is available in the 5000 lm, 1.39 m (4.56 ft) luminaire

Walkway Lighting Application Simulation
FELED Series light fittings provide similar or higher lumen output and greater lighting uniformity compared to FE Series fluorescent fittings.
In walkway applications the hazardous area light fittings have potential to achieve illumination targets with fewer luminaires, higher mounting heights or reduced wattage light fttings.
In the application simulation below, three Appleton ATX FELED5 luminaires provide sufficient illumination for the walkway with good uniformity and vertical illumination.

Optical Radiation and Photobiological Safety Requirements in Lighting
Photobiology is the study of the interaction of optical radiation with living organisms. Optical radiation, another term for light, can be visible and invisible and is comprised of UV, IR and blue light emissions. It is strongly absorbed in tissue, with the skin and eyes of the human body most at risk of exposure. All visible light (380 nm to 780 nm) can, in principle, only damage the eye by thermal or photochemical effects.
The purpose of photobiological safety standards is to protect users from the harmful effects caused by optical radiations emitted by lighting devices. Within the European Union, the standards in the field of photobiological safety are IEC / EN 62471 and the more recent Technical Report IEC / TR 62778. The American standard in the field of photobiological safety is ANSI IESNA RP 27.
These standards define values for levels of risk ranging from Risk Group Exempt (RG0) (lamp / LED does not pose any photobiological hazard) to Group 3 (high risk) (lamp / LED may pose a hazard even for momentary or brief exposure).
Appleton FELED diffused luminaires are rated RG0, Risk Group Exempt.
Area Illumination: Safe, Efficient Explosion Proof Lighting
For proper illumination in extreme conditions, you need a lighting manufacturer who engineers their light fittings and luminaires to ensure optimal light dispersion, creating more usable light.
Upgrading from fluorescent to LED is seamless with a one-to-one installation retrofit.
Effective lighting is critical for worker safety and productivity; particularly when flammable gases, vapors and dusts are present in hazardous area locations. Midstream natural gas compressor stations are a prime example. Appleton FELED Series luminaires and light fittings provide:
- Certification for use in Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous locations
- Easy retrofitting to the FE fluorescent mounting hardware and footprint already in extensive use in these facilities
- A lumen output range suitable for everything from task, tunnel and walkway lighting to expansive spaces and higher mounting requirements
- A low profile that provides clearance in confined spaces and withstands high winds and jets of water in weather-exposed installations
- 60,000+ hours of operation with no lamps to change, minimising maintenance costs and maximising operational uptime

ATEX Lighting Systems
Hazardous Area Lighting

ATEX
When specifying LED replacements for traditional floodlight and bay lighting, the most important factor to consider and compare is ‘delivered lumens’ i.e. the amount of useable light, discounting losses and wasted light.
Traditional manufacturers of hazardous area lighting often only quote lumens at source, i.e. lumens at the bulb before it’s travelled through any lensing. But traditional hazardous area light fittings are typically only around 60% efficient in transmitting useable light out of the lighting, meaning that the delivered lumens can often be up to 40% less than quoted.
Also, consumption is usually quoted without considering gear losses, so you often find the ‘true’ consumption of your traditional Ex hazardous area lighting to be up to 15% more.

25K Lumens at Source
In contrast, Raytec SPARTAN Ex LED White-Light luminaires are >90% efficient, delivering more lumens per watt and achieving significant power savings over traditional Ex light fittings. They also have a much higher CRI (or true colour representation) than traditional lighting and deliver a highly directional beam of light with minimum wastage. This gives the appearance or perception that the illuminated area is in fact much brighter.

ATEX Certified Hazardous Area Linear Light Fittings – LED Product Range Additions
Hazardous Area Light Fittings
Raytec SPARTAN have added two new variants to the LED Linear hazardous area lighting range with the launch of the Raytec WL84-1200 and WL168-1500 luminaires – the ATEX light fittings offer the user lighting for hazardous area locations with the output of a 2ft and 4ft LED fitting, but in the body of a larger 4ft and 5ft luminaire respectively.
Raytec Linear lighting has been designed as a retrofit solution for traditional fluorescent to maximise value and cost savings.
Be Efficient, Upgrade Your Hazardous Area Light Fittings Easily
The performance benefits of LED light fittings can allow the user to downsize the size of the hazardous area light fitting when switching and ultimately save money.
However, recognising that many lighting installations require a retrofit solution, where for ease of installation the physical size of the light fitting needs to be the same as the fluorescent fitting it’s replacing, Raytec have launched the SPARTAN Linear WL84-1200 (a 4ft fitting with the output of the standard WL84 2ft fitting), and Linear WL168-1500 (a 5ft light fitting with the output of a standard WL168 4ft fitting).
The SPARTAN Linear WL84-1200 is a direct retrofit to existing 2x36w fluorescent lighting.
With an energy saving of 56% per fitting, the WL84-1200 light fitting can offer significant energy savings and cost reductions over larger hazardous area installations.
The larger light fitting is the SPARTAN WL168-1500 which is a direct retrofit to existing 2x58w fluorescent lighting and delivers an energy saving of 41% per fitting.
The lumen output and light distribution also allow a direct, easy replacement of traditional fluorescent luminaires, meaning clients will be able to upgrade lighting installations without complication and enjoy all the benefits of long life LED lighting while making regular lamp changes redundant and achieving large energy savings.

Raytec SPARTAN Linear Zone 1 & Zone 2 Light Fittings
Reduce Lighting Maintenance Costs
The modular design, which is a feature across all of the Raytec SPARTAN products, also extends to the SPARTAN WL84-1200 and WL168-1500 light fittings and allows quick and easy servicing and inspection of all key components including LED and PSU modules. With a traditional hazardous area fluorescent fitting this would not be possible and maintenance would be required more regularly.
With the additional benefit of Raytec SPARTAN’s effective thermal management system, the LEDs are kept cool and the operating temperature low, so you can be sure that your light fitting will provide exceptional performance over a long lifetime when compared to fluorescent lighting solutions.

EAC Approved & Certified
Lighting Products for Hazardous Areas
Raytec’s SPARTAN range of LED lighting for hazardous areas has been credited with EAC Russian Certification, widening the global approval of SPARTAN luminaires and lighting products for explosive atmospheres to provide new opportunities for business growth in new markets.
EAC is the Mark of Conformity for Customs Unions (CU) Countries – the GOST safety mark has been replaced by this new conformity mark called the EurAsian Conformity Mark or EAC.
Crossing Continents & Creating Opportunities for UK Manufacturing
As well as opening access into Russia, the EAC certification allows SPARTAN lighting products and all other EAC certified electrical equipment to be supplied into the Eurasian Customs Union (EACU): this includes Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan where EAC Certified products are specified for hazardous area lighting in onshore and offshore oil, gas and petrochemical projects.
The Raytec SPARTAN range of LED technology lighting products and fittings are manufactured in the UK and stocked, supplied and distributed globally by Approved Channel Partner, Thorne & Derrick International.
The new EAC Certificate of Conformity for the Customs Union for Safety of Equipment for use in explosive atmospheres is mandatory for any electrical equipment including lighting systems that are to be operated or installed in hazardous areas and potentially explosive atmospheres in these countries.
So How Can We Help?
Thorne & Derrick are Specialist Distributors of Hazardous Area & Explosion Proof Equipment with EAC Certifications to international projects through our Exports Division.
We supply major international infrastructure projects and also MRO (Maintenance, Repair, Operations) requirements for both planned and unplanned plant shutdowns – we react with a rapid response to customer demand to ensure downtime is minimised and reliable Power, Light & Heat is restored or provided.
Working closely with clients and our supply chain we can assess the condition and degradation of your hazardous area installations and implement EAC conformant specifications to manage the planned replacement of legacy equipment with international classifications including EAC, ATEX and IECEx.

EAC

EurAsian Conformity Mark (EAC)
The EAC declaration and the EAC certificate in conformity with the technical regulations TR CU of the Eurasian Economic Union are EAC Certification documents issued by independent accredited certification bodies. Such organizations perform their function through laboratories accredited to the public agencies in charge of the supervision of metrology and standardisation in the the countries of the EAC Economic Union.
The Eurasian Conformity mark (EAC, Russian: Евразийское соответствие ЕАС) is a certification mark to indicate products intended for use and installation in hazardous area industries (eg oil, gas and petrochemicals) conform to all technical regulations of the Eurasian Customs Union. It means that the EAC-marked products, including lighting products, meet all requirements of the corresponding technical regulations and have passed all conformity assessment procedures. The mark was introduced in August 2013.
The certification centers for the EAC Customs Union assesses the conformity of given products to the relevant regulations TR CU. The quality assessment, followed by the awarding of an EAC certification, allows the access to the markets of EAC members. The legislation does not provide any discrimination between goods produced within or outside of the EAC certification area. Nevertheless, the presence of a representative registered in one of the three member countries, to formally require the document, is required.
Requirement for EAC Marking & Conformity
- EAC marking must be easy to read with the naked eye
- Dimensions of the EAC mark should not be less than 5 mm
- EAC marking should be monochrome and colour contrast to the surface
- EAC sign sholud be placed to guarantee its legibility throughout the life of products
Barry Thompson, Director of Raytec’s Hazardous Area Lighting Division, commented, “as we look to expand and grow the global presence of our SPARTAN LED lighting range, we recognise the value and potential which the Russian market holds. Obtaining this certification is pre requisite to allow us to compete in what we believe will become a very important market place for us”.
Terry McDonald, Business Development Manager for Thorne & Derrick, adds, “we look forward to further developing our current business levels in the Russian and Caspian Oil and Gas markets for our ranges of explosion proof products for use in hazardous area locations. This EAC conformity achievement for Raytec and their SPARTAN lighting products is a significant step towards that goal.”
