Now that the UK has left the EU, we all must come to terms with what that means on a practical level. In the ‘Ex’ certification world, there are definite challenges as ATEX will not be accepted in the UK next year. If you want to continue to sell Ex equipment in the UK, you will have to make changes, and these changes may involve getting your equipment certified to the new ‘UKCA’ Scheme.
It is now required that ‘Ex’ electrical products for Zone 0 and 1, non-electrical products for Zone 0, all ‘unit verifications’ and certain safety device will require a certificate from a Government Appointed UKCA Body. A UKCA QAN (Manufacturing Quality Audit) will also be required from a UKCA Body for such certifications. In addition, Zone 1 ‘non-electrical’ equipment will require Files to be lodged with a suitably appointed UKCA Body.
Only Bodies that are listed on the UK Government Website can issue UKCA EX Certificates where that previously required a Notified Body. ExVeritas are one of only about half a dozen companies in the world who are Government Appointed to issue these certificates, so it is going to get very busy.
In many cases the process is quite painless and often only a paperwork exercise, but the UKCA QAN Audit does also have to be conducted before you can manufacture equipment. This will be necessary to apply the UK Appointed Body Number on the label under the UKCA Mark (as it was before with the CE Mark).
It is also worth noting that the UKCA Certification will be issued against the list of UK Government Designated Standards. As it is a new scheme, all products will normally need to be to the latest Standards as published on the UK Government Web Site. I recommend all manufactures who want to remain on the UK ‘Ex’ market start the process immediately.

Only UKCA Issued ‘EX’ Certificates will be accepted from the 1st January 2022 in the UK for products that previously required ATEX Notified Body Certification.
For ‘Ex’ products (formerly ATEX) only ‘UKCA Bodies’ (the UK equivalent of an ATEX Notified body) such as ExVeritas will be able to issue the appropriate certificates needed for entry to the UK market and the Standards used will be determined by the UK List of approved Standard (BS).
ExVeritas have been informed officially by the UK Government that we will automatically become a UK approved body from 1st January 2021, and we will keep our 4-digit identification number (2585). There will also be a new UK database which will replace the EU’s New Approach Notified and Designated Organisations (NANDO) database.
The UKCA marking can be used from 1st January 2021.
However, to allow businesses time to adjust to the new requirements, you will still be able to use the CE marking until 1st January 2022 in many cases.
The CE marking will be accepted in the UK until 1st January 2022 for some products such as existing stock – eg, a product covered by a UK certificate of conformity, and which would normally need UKCA marking after 1st January 2021, can still be sold in the UK with a CE marking so long as it is from pre-existing stock fully manufactured before 31st December 2020. You will be able to use the CE marking until 31st December 2021 if the following apply:
You can only place CE marked goods that meet EU requirements in Great Britain while UK and EU requirements are the same. This will be the case on 1st January 2021 and there are no UK plans to diverge at this time.
In all cases you must be ready to use the UKCA marking from 1st January 2022 at the latest, although you should look to use the UKCA marking as soon as possible.
From 1st January 2021, the UKCA mark will be the required marking for Great Britain for most goods currently subject to CE marking
The UK Declaration of Conformity is a document which must be drawn up for most products lawfully bearing a UKCA marking.

Authorised representatives and responsible persons based in the EU will no longer be recognised in Great Britain from 1st January 2021.
If you need to (or choose to) use an authorised representative or responsible person, they will need to be based in the UK for products being placed on the GB market.
Goods can carry both the CE and UKCA markings so long as such they are fully compliant with both UK and EU regulations. As ExVeritas are both a UKCA and an ATEX Notified Body (in Denmark) we are one of only a handful of companies that can issue both approvals in parallel.

Due to the UK leaving the EU, the UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed) marking is a new UK product marking regulation that will be used in place of the CE mark for goods being placed in the UK market.
CSA Group’s Sira Certification Service (No. 0518) will be recognized as an UK approved body on 1 January 2021, allowing us to perform conformity assessments for UKCA markings for those products.
Starting 1 January 2021, the UKCA mark will be the conformity assessment marking for goods entering the UK market that are currently subject to CE marking. However, to allow time for adjustments to the new requirements, businesses will still be able to use the CE marking until 1 January 2022.
Businesses should be ready to use the UKCA marking from 1 January 2022 at the latest, although they should look to use the UKCA marking as soon as possible.
From 1 January 2021 businesses can apply the UKCA marking to their product or to the packaging. In some cases, it may be placed on the manuals or on other supporting literature. This will vary depending on the specific regulations that apply to the product.

Starting 1 January 2021 any mandatory third-party conformity assessment for the EU market will need to be carried out by an EU-recognized conformity assessment body.
Very few Testing, Inspection and Certification (TIC) providers have the physical presence and notified body status in both the EU and UK to meet the requirements and issue the CE and UKCA marks.
Goods can carry both the CE and UKCA markings so long as they are fully compliant with both UK and EU regulations. Frequently Asked Questions about Brexit and the new UKCA marking
1. What is the UKCA?
The UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed) marking is a new UK product marking regulation that will be used in place of the CE mark in the UK market.
2. What is the current status with the implementation of the UKCA mark?
The UK has left the EU and the current transition period after Brexit comes to an end on 31st December 2020. From 1st January 2021, the UKCA mark can be used on products placed on the UK market. The UKCA marking will apply to most goods that are currently subject to CE marking.
Whilst the UKCA mark becomes available from 1st January 2021 (whereby manufacturers will be permitted to mark their products with UKCA marking (subject to the relevant assessment being conducted)), to allow businesses time to adjust, CE marked goods in scope of UKCA, that meet EU requirements, can continue to be placed on the GB market until 1st January 2022, whereby EU and UK requirements remain the same. This will include, for example, products certified by an EU Notified Body.
The transition period is strictly time limited and the advice is for businesses to be ready for full implementation of the new UK regime as soon as possible after 1st January 2021, including (where applicable) engaging the services of a UK approved body.
Another transitional measure being introduced allows for the UKCA mark to be affixed to an accompanying document (in lieu of the actual product) until 1st January 2023 (after which the UKCA mark must be affixed directly to the product) to ease any potential burden on product labelling changes.
3. Based on the above, will the UK accept CE marked goods?
Yes, for a time-limited period. Until 1st January 2022, CE marked goods will be accepted on the UK market. Third-party approved products bearing the CE mark must be issued from an EU Notified Body.
4. Can the same body assess and certify products for entry into both the UK and EU?
No, however, CSA Group is one of only a few organizations that can provide solutions for entry into both Europe and the UK, specifically for products used in ‘Ex’ explosive atmospheres (hazardous locations), due to our position as a leading testing, inspection and certification company.
UKCA assessment and certification must be conducted by a UK Approved Body located in the UK. For entry into the EU, certification must be conducted by an EU Notified Body. Under CSA Group we maintain both an EU ATEX Notified Body (CSA Group Netherlands B.V, Notified Body number 2813), and an UK Approved Body (Sira Certification Service (No. 0518).
On 1 January 2021, Sira Certification Service will be automatically appointed a UK approved body. This ensures we can offer both ATEX and UKCA services in a seamless and efficient manner.
5. Will CSA Group be automatically accredited as a UK Approved Body on 1st January 2021?
Yes. CSA Group’s UK-based body, Sira Certification Service, will be automatically appointed a UK Approved Body on 1st January 2021 and will be able to conduct third-party approval services for UKCA from this date onwards.
6. What will the actual assessment and certification process look like?
While we await clear guidance from the UK authorities on this, we anticipate the assessment and certification process will operate in a very similar manner to what is currently provided for ATEX for the EU market.
7. Can I use the assessment data in my CSA Group ATEX file in support of the issue of a UKCA certificate?
Yes. As the legislation for UKCA for ‘Ex’ products is broadly similar when compared to ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU, our certification team will base their assessment of UKCA on this existing data.
8. Can existing ATEX certificates issued by other test bodies be used as supporting documentation for CSA Group (Sira Certification Service) to issue certification for UKCA?
Yes, and CSA Group will provide any additional evaluation needed to support the issue of a UKCA mark certificate.
9. Which documents are needed for the assessment?
Documentation that is used in the assessment process will emulate that of the CE mark in the EU market so the documents for CE mark should be sufficient, with appropriate amendment to include the UKCA marking.
10. How long will such an assessment take?
Timing will be based on the review of the application data, and the availability of such data. Please contact CSA Group for more details.
11. I have an ATEX certificate issued by CSA Group’s Sira Certification Service, Notified Body 0518. What will happen to my certificate on 1st January 2021?
The process, with client permission, would be to have the ATEX file transferred to our EU Notified Body, CSA Group Netherlands (Notified Body 2813). If this is not done before 1st January 2021, the ATEX file would be invalid and could not be used to place product on the EU marketplace. Nor could it be used to place product on the UK market.
12. I have an ATEX certificate issued by CSA Group Netherlands, Notified Body 2813. What will happen to my certificate on 1st January 2021?
Your certificate will continue to remain valid when placing product on the EU marketplace. For UK entry, the UK Government published guidance on 1st September which explains that CE-marked products will continue to be accepted into the UK until 1st January 2022, allowing for a 1-year transition period.
Products will have to be UKCA-approved by this time to enter the UK. However, the UK Government’s advice is to ensure you implement UKCA as soon as possible in 2021. CSA Group is here to support you in gaining UKCA approval; please contact us for more details.
13. Can or should I mark my product as UKCA compliant now?
The UKCA mark cannot be used or placed on products until 1st January 2021. However, CSA Group can carry out assessments and certification prior to this date, so that your product can be marked as UKCA compliant from 1st January 2021.
14. Is the UKCA mark accepted within the EU?
No. Products currently requiring CE marking will still need a CE mark for sale in the EU from 1st January 2021.
15. I have CE marked product in stock. Am I able to place this product on the UK market without a UKCA mark?
Yes, subject to any third-party approval that supported the affixing of the CE mark being based in an EU member country. Further, this stock would have to be placed on the market prior to the end of the January 2022 transition period.
16. How do I affix the UKCA mark to my product?
In most cases, UKCA marks need to be affixed to the product itself. As mentioned above, some provision has been made for the UKCA mark to be added to accompanying documentation instead of the product until 1st January 2023, after which, UKCA marking must be affixed to the product. 17. Will I need a separate quality audit in addition to my QAN?
Where allowable, we would expect to use existing quality audit data and carryout combined UKCA/ATEX audits where possible.

Electrical equipment generates heat when in use and can therefore ignite explosive atmospheres. As a result, when an electrical device is installed in a hazardous environment where explosive gases are present, the device’s temperature class (the maximum surface temperature that the device may reach in service) must be considered.

Fixing Kits

Lighting Tripods
For standalone floodlite positioning, Wolf’s tripods give a stable platform allowing the floodlite to be attached and used at a variety of heights, enabling light to be directed at the work area from a wide variety of angles. The Tripods are lightweight, easily transportable and ideal to help maximise the work area illuminated. Tripods are particularly useful for larger areas where increasing the height allows a greater area to be illuminated, and for trench work, where light can be directed into the trench below. WF-480: Stainless Steel Mesh Cover – ideal for use in harsher environments where the lamp could be subjected to rough use, the WF-480 Stainless Steel Mesh Cover is easily and quickly mounted and removed from the floodlight frame with the supplied fixings.
WF-421/3: Anti-Static Lens Guard (Hazardous Area Certified) – the Hazardous Area certified, anti-static WF-421/3 Lens Guard can be attached to the front of the floodlite with the provided screws to protect the toughened glass lens and increase the life of the product, whilst still allowing excellent light output.
WF-462: Anti-Static Protection Cover Kit (Hazardous Area Certified) – The Hazardous Area certified, anti-static WF-462 Protection Kit protects the light from dirt, paint and other contaminates. Covering the whole product, the protection cover seals around the power cable with the cable ties provided, minimalising damage to the light and helping to extend its useful life.

Wolf WF-300XL Accessories
A range of accessories to accommodate and enhance the usage of the Wolf Air powered ATEX and Ex Approved hazardous area Wolf Airlamps. The range includes:
Folding Tripod Stand (A-300)
This very strong and convenient tripod stand is available for mounting airlamps in such a way that illumination can be angled in most directions. The lamp can be clamped to the tripod head without the need of any tools. When not in use the tripod can be folded away for easy storage.
Anti-Static Compressed Air Hose (A-179 and A-180)
This special 12mm bore single braid hose is manufactured from an anti-static compound and is available in 18.3 metre (A-179) or 36.6 metre (A-180) lengths. Stainless Steel Hose Clips are provided but air line couplings are not for reasons of possible incompatibility.
Air Line Filters (A-184 and A-186)
A simple automatic drain airline filter (A-184) can be supplied, but where there are major difficulties in achieving the air quality required then an ultra high efficiency filter system (A-186) is recommended.
Due to the extra filtration the A-186 filter provides, there is an increased restriction on the air supplied through the air supply system, typical figures of the number of lights that can be used with the two types of filters are shown below:-
A-184 standard filter, having an air flow rate of 4.48m³/min can supply:-
A-186 ultra high efficiency filter, having a air flow rate of 1.67m³/min can supply:-
Note: These figures assume that the compressor is adequate to deliver clean dry air of a suitable flowrate and pressure to the specific Wolf products that it will be powering and that the air system in general is well designed and has minimal losses.
Wolf’s extensive range of positioning, mounting and protection accessories, encompassing fixing kits, films and cable management, for the LinkEx™ LED Temporary Luminaire (LX-400 & LX-400E) give workers more secure temporary installation solutions for temporary lighting in hazardous area working environments.
Wolf’s LinkEx™ LED Temporary Luminaire plastic brackets, with snap shut mechanism and screw to lock securely closed around a luminaire, form a key component of all Wolf’s fixing kits giving flexible and sturdy mounting and positioning options for temporary applications. Securely mount or hang a luminaire almost anywhere and in any orientation – putting the luminaire exactly where it is needed.

Note: Each kit contains the brackets to mount one LinkEx™ LED Temporary Luminaire or two lights where Dual specified.
Tripods
For standalone luminaire positioning, Wolf’s tripods give a stable platform allowing the luminaire to be attached with the Tripod Bracket Kit and used at a variety of heights and positions to deliver vertical or horizontal forward facing light, in the horizontal position the light can be directed upwards, illuminating the work area from the underside.
The range of Tripod Stands available are lightweight, easily transportable, made from steel and will extend a lamp to a height of up to 3.2 metres and are ideal for both ‘180°’ (unidirectional illumination) and ‘360°’ (omni-directional ‘all round’ illumination) luminaires to maximise light area coverage for workers.
Films, Protective Covers & Cable Management
Not only is the positioning and mounting of luminaires key to worker efficiency but also the protection of the outer tube from damage to ensure its longevity, in optimal condition, for repeat usage. Wolf luminaires are used regularly in blasting, jetting, coating and painting applications and are protected from residue build-up by the use of a Protective Film or Protective Cover Kit, easily replaced between uses to ensure the product is delivering maximum light output without obstructions. Each film is supplied with an easy peel foam back adhesive for ease of application.
LX-545/3 Anti-Static Protective Film (Hazardous Area Certified) – the Hazardous Area certified, anti-static LX-545/3 Protective Film can be attached to luminaire protect it from dirt, paint and other contaminants to increase the life of the product, whilst still allowing excellent light output. Each pack contains 3 films.
LX-621 Anti-Static Protection Cover Kit (Hazardous Area Certified) – The Hazardous Area certified, anti-static LX-621 Protection Pack protects the light from dirt, paint and other contaminates. Covering the whole product, the protective cover seals around the power cable with the cable ties provided, minimising potential damage to the light and helping to extend its useful life. Each kit contains 5 bags.
If the luminaire is deemed too bright, when being used in a confined space at head height by a worker, an LX-374 Internal Diffuser Film can be installed to minimise glare. Finally, to keep the working area free from potential trip hazards, cable can be managed using a LX-692 Magnet Cable Tidy to elevate it from the ground along a ferrous metal surface.
