LIQUID MEASUREMENT IN DISSOLVING TANKS
The precursors for the manufacture of colour pigments are dissolved in the dissolving tank – the Naptha based precursors are mainly Naphtha based, and, depending on the formulation, water and sodium hydroxide solution are added as solvents for the production of the basic pigment solution. An agitator ensures uniform mixing of substances as they are added – the level measuring system is needed to ensure reliable values that are delivered to the control system.

VEGA VEGAPULS 64
VEGAVEGAPULS 64, the first radar level sensor on the market for liquids that measures at a frequency of 80 GHz. This feature allows considerably better focusing of the radar beam. With this new instrument, measuring is much easier and more reliable, even under difficult conditions, such as tanks fitted with heating coils, baffles or agitators.
Thorne & Derrick are Specialist Distributors of Hazardous Area & Explosion Proof Equipment with IECEx & ATEX Certifications to the onshore and offshore oil, gas, petrochemicals and process industries.
In the petrochemical industry in order for the crude oil process to run continuously and smoothly care has to be taken when storing raw and finished products. Delivery of the crude oil is via pipeline or ship and stored in a large tank until it is ready for final processing.
Accurate level measurement of products of distillation is essential whilst they are being stored in different sized tanks.
In the past it was expensive as calibratable measuring devices were implemented for level measurement. Nowadays cheaper and low maintenance measuring systems are used for small and medium sized tanks. Products are now usually measured by calibratable flow meters while being moved.
Simple Contactless Measurement With VEGAPULS 62
The radar sensor VEGAPULS 62 is suitable for level measurement especially in small and mid-size refinery vessels. Being small and light, the level sensor can be mounted without difficulty in an existing mounting boss, or integrated into a manhole.
With an accuracy of 3 mm, the VEGAPULS 62 sensor is ideal for inventory tank management and can easily be coupled with superordinate systems. Through the use of a temperature adapter, process temperatures up to 200 °C can be realised enabling level measurement of highly viscous distillation products such as lubricating oil or bitumen. VEGAPULS 62 has also proven itself very well as overfill protection in floating roof vessels.

VEGAFLEX 61 – Using Existing Standpipes & New Technology
Until now, mechanical measuring systems such as float gauges or displacers were often implemented. To guarantee precise measuring results, such devices (VEGAFLEX 61) are used mainly in standpipes. Due to the large equalisation holes in the pipes, it is often impossible to replace existing systems with free radiating radar sensors – the holes cause interfering reflections.
This is a situation in which the guided microwave device provides a simple, as well as reliable, solution for level measurement. When the sensor is mounted in the center of the existing standpipe, a coaxial measuring system with optimal signal transmission is created. The result is high accuracy and dependability, without large expenditures for installation and setup.
Reliable Overfill Protection – VEGASWING 63
In principle, a continuous measuring system can be implemented for overfill protection. However, as a completely different measuring principle, the vibrating level switch VEGASWING 63 provides additional safety. Independent of product characteristics, the level sensor reliably detects the threshold level and thus ensures a high degree of plant safety.
The annual instrument check is carried out quickly and reliably with a simple push of a button on the instrument. VEGASWING 63 is ideally suited for leakage monitoring in tank enclosures.

Level Sensors
By Chris Dodds : estimated reading time 5 minutes
In the oil and gas Industry measuring the mud flow in the return line is essential to stop solid matter from causing a blockage when the mud is flowing back from the borehole. The mud return system is carefully monitored to ensure there is no damage to the drilling head or interruptions to production.
Mud Flow Measurement With VEGA VEGAPULS 62
VEGA VEGAPULS 62 allows a completely contactless and maintenance-free, mud flow measurement in the return line. The flow is determined by measuring the level in the pipeline. The level sensor is mounted parallel to the pipeline, so the microwaves are first deflected by 90° and then sent through an opening in the return line – hazardous area level sensors are also available.
In contrast to contacting measuring techniques, VEGA VEGAPULS 62 provides a totally wear and maintenance-free measurement. The mud flow in the return line remains unhindered since no bottlenecks are created by fittings or other parts of the sensor.

hazardous area level sensors WITH ATEX CERTIFICATION
Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) & Liquid Natural Gas (LNG)
Liquid gases such as butane and propane are created in crude oil distillation processes.
The gases are stored either under pressure in horizontal or spherical tanks or at incredibly low temperatures. There are operational issues as the level measurement sensors need to be highly reliable as the tanks cannot be open for several years at a time.
ATEX
The ATEX hazardous area directive consists of two EU directives describing the type of equipment and work environment allowed in an environment with an explosive atmosphere. ATEX derives its name from the French title of the 94/9/EC directive: Appareils destinés à être utilisés en ATmosphères EXplosibles.
Selecting electrical, process or instrumentation equipment for hazardous areas can be complex and several factors must be considered in the decision making process.
Hazardous area classification must be carried out according to established codes (such as ATEX) or quantitative methods requiring a detailed knowledge of the plant. Sources of flammable gas or vapour release must also be identified, located and attributed to the specific potentially explosive Gas Group (G) or Dust Group (D).
Furthermore, explosive gases and dusts have an ignition temperature – the ATEX certified level sensors according to the equipment marking should be matched against the equipment temperature class (T).
Ambient temperatures, protection concepts and hazardous area zone also dictate the selection process and level sensor specification – should you require any assistance with the selection or specification of process instrumentation equipment including level sensors please do not hesitate to contact us.

Level & Interface Measurement
WITH VEGA VEGAFLEX 67
Especially for measuring ranges up to 6 metre, the VEGAFLEX 67 guided microwave instrument offers the best solution for continuous level measurement, with simultaneous detection of the water level in LPG applications. Part of the transmitted signal penetrates the surface of the liquefied gas and is reflected by the water surface that exists close to the bottom of the vessel. Both levels are indicated via the analysis of the two signals.

Trouble-Free Retrofitting
WiTH VEGA VEGAPULS 68
Retrofitting with standpipes for level measurement is work and cost-intensive, especially in large vessels. The high-sensitivity radar instrument VEGAPULS 68 can acquire level data of liquid gas without the usual standpipes. A ball valve separates the level sensor from the process and enables retrofitting without emptying the vessel.

VEGA VEGAPULS 63 – Extremely Low Temperatures
VEGAPULS 63 is the ideal sensor for all applications in extremely low temperatures. Due to the antenna cover of PTFE, the level sensing instrument can be used even when product temperatures drop to -200 °C. An additional temperature-isolating elastomer seal is not required – for products with poor reflective properties, such as liquid nitrogen, application with a standpipe is recommended.

VEGA VEGASON Ultrasonic Level Measurement – Suitable For Hazardous Area Applications
By Chris Dodds : estimated reading time 3 minutes
Ultrasonic Level Sensors – vega VEGASON
In non-contact ultrasonic level measurement, short ultrasonic pulses in the range of 10 – 70kHz are emitted from the transducer in the direction of the medium, which then reflects them back.
The time it takes form emission to reception is proportional to the level in the vessel.
Ultrasonic level measurement is an ideal solution for both liquids and solids.
Non-contact ultrasonic level sensors operate independently of medium properties and can even penetrate dusty environments.
Ultrasonic level transmitters can be used to measure most liquids and solids providing accurate level indication in storage or process applications and can be used in temperatures up to 150°C and at pressures up to 3bar.
Ultrasonic level transmitters are unaffected by changes in product density and conductivity – transmitters use linearization software to calculate level versus shape and are able to provide a direct output of volume unaffected by changes to product density, conductivity and is temperature compensated for changes in the speed of sound.
Typical Applications for Ultrasonic Level Measurement
Level measurement during processing and storage of liquids
Sumps and wastewater tanks
Level indication in silo’s and hoppers
Over conveyors for low cost non contact flow measurement and detection
T&D recommend the range of VEGASON ultrasonic level sensors for accurate level measurement in a wide range of applications.
