MEDC SIL1 & SIL2 Rated Sounders, Beacons & Call Points

SIL 1 & SIL 2 Sounders, Beacons & Call Points

Reduce The Risk Of Failure With MEDC

The global importance of SIL (Safety Integrity Levels) has grown substantially in the process industries over the years. However, for many end users, systems integrators, and product vendors, SIL is still a somewhat ambiguous concept that often is misinterpreted and incorrectly implemented.

What is a Safety Integrity Level (SIL)?

SIL – level of safety assigned to a single SIF (SIL1, 2, 3, 4).

Carries technical and non-technical requirements, higher the level the stricter the requirements.

EN 61508, which followed on from IEC 61508, defines the safety integrity level as follows:

The SIL refers to “four well-differentiated levels for specifying the requirement for safety integrity of safety functions assigned to the E/E/PE safety-related system, with Safety Integrity Level 4 being the highest level of safety integrity and Safety Integrity Level 1 being the lowest.”

A SIL is a measure of safety system performance, in terms of probability of failure on demand (PFD). This convention was chosen based on the numbers: it is easier to express the probability of failure rather than that of proper performance (e.g., 1 in 100,000 vs. 99,999 in 100,000). There are four discrete integrity levels associated with SIL: SIL 1, SIL 2, SIL 3, and SIL 4.

MEdc

In high risk industries such oil, gas and petrochemicals, adopting SIL1 and SIL2 systems is becoming the norm, in particular for the safety-critical fire and gas detection systems.

While the fire and gas control panel will normally initiate automatic process shutdown procedures in the event of an alarm, the audible and visual warning devices are critical components in ensuring that personnel are warned in an emergency.

MEDC offer a globally approved range of signals (sounders, beacons and call points etc) that provide the ultimate in life safety notification in both hazardous area and safe area applications.

Many products are now available with SIL1 and SIL2 compliance as standard. Expert third party Probability of Failure on Demand (PFD) analysis of the extensive product reliability data available for these product ranges confirms SIL1 and SIL2 compliance.

The approval now means that SIL1 and SIL2 approval can be provided for explosion proof audible and visual signals in marine grade aluminium, GRP or stainless steel enclosures as well as ABS plastic safe area devices.

The support Chris has received helps massively as the travelling and cost of training wear/equipment is not cheap for example he is competing in the Northern Championships and this weekend alone with travel and accommodation will cost over £200.

Also being from the North East of England Chris doesn’t have the support that he would do if he lived in the south therefore he needs to travel further to take part in competitions at the highest level.

Leading Pack
A little bit about Chris… Chris started running at 8 and quickly we realised he had a talent. By 9 he was running 18.12 for the Parkrun (5k) which was the quickest time ran by a 9 yr old in the world. Read more here – https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/meet-durham-lad-who-could-8678926

Some of Chris’ greatest achievements were winning the London Mini Marathon at u13 level.

Retaining the NE Cross Country championship 5yrs in a row, gaining two cross country England vests and one track (800m) England vest. Chris excels from cross country to the road and track, always being very versatile and able to switch between the different events.

At present Chris is studying for his A-levels and trying to fit in as much competition as possible before he heads to America to study Chemical Engineering on a scholarship for Athletics.

During the winter Chris ran at the Northern indoors and became silver medallist in the 1500m and 3000m.  Chris then stepped outside onto the track and became Gold medallist in the NE 1500m and 5000m.

Chris medal

He broke a 20yr old record by a massive 35secs. Last Wednesday he competed in a 3000m race which he won with an impressive 6sec personal best. This weekend we will travel to Manchester where he will take part in the Northern outdoor 1500m.

Electromagnetic Compatible (EMC) Plugs & Sockets

Electromagnetic Compatible (EMC)

Plugs & Sockets For Industrial Applications

Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) is the ability of a product to operate satisfactorily in its electromagnetic environment without introducing electromagnetic interference itself. But what does this mean concretely for the industrial sector?

The Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive (EMCD) ensures that electrical and electronic equipment does not generate, or is not affected by, electromagnetic disturbance

The MARECHAL solutions are made up of a DECONTACTOR™ EMC industrial plug and socket outlets range, specifically designed up to 400 A and 1000 V. They help to avoid accidental shutdowns due to electromagnetic interference.

➡️ Thorne & Derrick have been appointed as official distributors and stockists of Marechal plugs and sockets in the UK, as of the 1st March 2023. Our demonstrated knowledge and expertise in the industry enables us to deliver the complete Marechal product offering in both Industrial and Hazardous Areas.

Where do these interference come from?

Disruptions can have many causes:

  • Natural factors, such as lightning
  • Devices designed to transmit/receive waves, such as mobile phones, radars, radio, television, etc
  • Devices that generate emissions, such as engines, digital circuits, etc

CONSEQUENCES OF ELECTRO-MAGNETIC WAVES

Electromagnetic waves can disturb a signal, causing the electrical installation, a robot or machine to malfunction or transmit an incomplete or erroneous message (data, ignition order, etc.) or even completely block an industrial manufacturing process.

As a result, these disruptions can impact the proper functioning and productivity of a plant as well as the safety of the site.

The best way to protect yourself from electromagnetic pollution is by ensuring the continuity of the shielded cable and thus the non-disruption of signals, using EMC products.

Wall Mounted Marechal Plug & Socket

Power & Control

The DECONTACTOR™ EMC auxiliary contacts allow the process control such as connection control, motor thermal control, programmable logic controller (PLC), signal transmission, etc.
The EMC option  allows a reduction in the power (in dB) of their inherent emission of electromagnetic waves. The electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) trials are carried out on all products according to the IEC 62153-4-5 : 2016 norm. In a frequency range between 30 MHz and 1000 MHz, the EMC option offers a reduction between 30 dB and 70 dB of electromagnetic emissions.

Electromagnetic Compatible (EMC) Socket Outlets

OPTIMAL TRANSMISSION OF POWER

The socket-outlets resist to corrosion and chemical agents. The silver-nickel butt contact tips with springs ensure a permanent contact pressure and an optimal conductivity even after years of intensive use. The specifically designed cable terminals provide our socket-outlets with optimal resistance to vibrations (especially preventing cable loosening) and temperature variations as well as outstanding cable anchoring.

RED All the external surfaces of the devices are not treated so as to ensure optimal electrical conductivity.

ORANGE The conductive sealings are made of either metallic fibers, Monel wires silicone or graphite-loaded wires silicone, ensuring excellent EMC performances.

MARECHAL has developed a simple and reliable solution with outstanding performances in electromagnetic environments. This solution is available for MARECHAL® industrial or hazardous area device ranges, for high currents up to 1 250 A or for signal and control up to 37 contacts. This solution is particularly adapted to electromagnetic environments involving variable frequency drives for electric motors.
