Hazardous Area ComfoRt Heating
Renewable Energy Industry
This Case Application for “The Bulldog” electric heater, which is manufactured by EXHEAT and is stocked and distributed exclusively in the UK by Thorne & Derrick, focuses on an application whereby the client required a comfort heating solution for workers in a warehouse, located in a Hazardous Area. The client is one of the leading energy companies for generating renewable energy in the UK. The renewable energy sector often involves work within hazardous locations and explosive atmospheres, thus requires equipment with ATEX & IECEx Certification and approvals for safe use in these locations.
Industry Sector | Renewable Energy
Hazardous Areas & Explosive Atmospheres
Electrical Heater Application & Benefits  | The portable electric fan heater with ATEX Certification was selected after careful competitor evaluation to provide a comfort heating solution to workers in a large warehouse involved in hazardous processes. The portable ATEX heaters, with T class rating – T3, were supplied by Thorne & Derrick to the UK’s leading renewable energy company – an ideal electrical heating solution for use in this Zone 1 Hazardous Area.
Hazardous Area Comfort Heating
According to HSE law, the minimum temperature in a workplace should be at least 16 degrees Celsius, or 13 degrees where work involves physical rigorous effort.
As the employer has a duty to determine and maintain a reasonable comfortable working temperature, we have assisted in this case by supplying a suitable heating product to deliver the required localised heating to four workers and workstations. The ‘Bulldog’ portable heater has not only delivered the required working temperatures to the workers in the warehouse, but has also enabled further worker productivity; derived from the new comfortable working environment.
This localised heating solution serves as an efficient alternative to heating the entire warehouse – which would lead to potential significant heat loss and costly energy requirements. The portable ATEX heater was supplied with an isolator and flameproof enclosure with emergency stop button for additional safety.
EXHEAT MFH
Thorne & Derrick provided the solution to the client of the EXHEAT MFH, 6-254 model, which is ATEX & IECEx certified, and offers Ingress protection of IP65. The MFH heater (“Bulldog”) is constructed with polyamide PA66 with glass and steel fibre reinforcement. The MFH Bulldog has an 18°C heat up from inlet to outlet, making it the ideal choice for this large warehouse application to deliver the required comfort heating to workers.

Filling containers In Hazardous Areas
This Case Application for “The Bulldog” electric heater, which is manufactured by EXHEAT and is stocked and distributed exclusively in the UK by Thorne & Derrick, focuses on an application whereby the client required a solution to ensure the safety and comfort of operatives who work on filling containers in a Hazardous Area.
The client provides chemistry, technology and engineering support to improve outcomes for upstream and midstream oil and gas operations – gas hazards in this sector are compounded by the very harshest and hazardous zone environments.
Industry Sector | Oil & Gas
Hazardous Areas & Explosive Atmospheres
Electrical Heater Application & Benefits  | The portable electric fan heater with ATEX Certification was selected after careful competitor evaluation to provide a safe comfort heating solution to operatives working in a drum filling station, filling containers, with a potential explosive atmosphere and flammable properties.
A portable solution was required to safely heat an outdoor shelter, classified as a hazardous area, provided to operatives filling containers at a drum filling station to enable comfortable working conditions and continued productivity. However, due to the design and constriction of the shelter, consisting of only 3 covered sides and a roof, minimal reduction was seen in winterisation impacts to the workers – heat loss being a major issue. The filling container operatives required sufficient levels of air warming to overcome low ambient temperatures and maintain labour productivity, through the provision of adequate levels of comfort electrical heating for the workforce.
Thorne & Derrick are aware of how cold weather could inflict catastrophic damage to your plant and facilities. This Winter, we have supplied a range of winterisation preventative equipment, to ensure the continued operation of facilities and safety of workers. Preventative maintenance today can safeguard and protect your processes against crippling downtime, revenue and output losses.
EXHEAT MFH
The client required a portable heating solution certified by ATEX for safe use in hazardous areas to heat up the local area with an inlet to outlet increase of 18°C.
We provided the solution to the client of the EXHEAT MFH, 5.5-240 model, which is ATEX & IECEx certified, and offers Ingress protection of IP65. The MFH heater (“Bulldog”) is constructed with polyamide PA66 with glass and steel fibre reinforcement.
The electric heater was also supplied with additional anti-static ducting to enable targeted and directed control of the air flow to improve energy efficiency and maximise the heat output in the potentially explosive atmosphere.
- T Class Rating T3
- Classified Hazardous Area Zone 1/2 (IIB) or Zone 21/22 (IIIC)
- Nominal Heat Output 5.5kW

Heating Refined Sugar
IBC Heaters
Thorne & Derrick International are the UK’s largest stockist and supplier of IBC Heaters providing excellent technical support and overnight delivery from stock for standard 1000 litre container heaters – the high quality UK manufactured electric heaters provide optimal thermal efficiency and highest levels of function safety. We can produce custom heating jackets designed to fit most shapes to deliver completely uniform surface heating over large areas without heat loss, hot spots or colds spots.
What Are IBC’s?
Intermediate Bulk Containers or IBCs are multi-use, reusable industrial-grade containers designed for the transport, handling and storage of liquids, pastes, semi-solids or solids.
These can include chemicals, food ingredients, sugars, solvents, oils, waxes, cosmetics, detergents and crop science products as well as hazardous class goods such as general and speciality chemicals, resins, paint and inks.
The contents of IBCs, particularly those which may become viscous at room temperature, often needs to be heated or kept at a certain temperature in order to prevent spoiling.

IBC Heaters For Sugar Refining Process
IBC Heaters for Heating Sugar During The Refining Process
The production of sugar, either from cane or beets, is a well-defined and energy-intensive industrial process involving extraction, purification, evaporation, and crystallisation. The juices are extracted at ambient temperature, but then must be heated from the purification stages right up to evaporation stage.

IBC Heaters for High Temperature Maintenance of Car Care Products & Oil Blending
IBC Heaters for Oil Blending
Oil blending is one of the last steps in the manufacture of a lubricant and is used to meet viscosity and VI requirements – The viscosity index (VI) is an arbitrary, unit-less measure of a fluid’s change in viscosity relative to temperature change
Lubricant blending involves the mixing different materials boiling in the lubricant boiling range to make a final homogenous product.
Usually a higher viscosity lubricant will be blended with a lower viscosity lubricant to achieve a blended lubricant of intermediate viscosity.

IBC Heaters for Heating Cooking Oil
The production process of vegetable oils for cooking involves the removal of oil from plant components, typically seeds. This can be done using either a mechanical extraction method using an oil mill or chemical extraction using a solvent which is the most commonly used method for soybean and corn oils.
Using solvent extracts produces a higher yield as well as being quicker and less expensive. After the extraction process, the cooking oil must be stored in containers which are able to be heated to reduce the viscosity of the oil.
