VEGA Sensors – Level & Pressure Instrumentation For The Renewables Industry
Vega level sensors
VEGAFLEX 81 Guided Wave Radar Level Sensor For Wind Turbines
The renewable energy sector continues to grow and wind turbines continue to be subjected to severe environments. On offshore wind farms the turbines have to contend with rough seas and windy conditions as well as corrosive salt water environments. It is inevitable that when the wind turbine plant is constructed seawater will end up in the turbine tower. Leaks need to be sensed and detected as they can lead to accelerated rates of corrosion if the water level is not monitored constantly.
VEGAFLEX 81 provides liquid level measurement from a temperature range of -60 to 200°C over 75 metres distance.
Guided Radar VEGA VEGAFLEX 81 for level measurement and interface in all liquid types provides reliable measurement data.
VEGAFLEX 81 Guided Wave Radar Level Sensor
For Wind Turbines
VEGAFLEX 81 guided wave radar level sensor is able to function regardless of the harsh atmosphere inside the wind turbine tower as it is made of high-resistance materials.
VEGAFLEX 81 wind turbine level sensor is very adaptable, simple to install and can still function when the electronics are up to 10 metres away from the sensor.

A guided wave radar level sensor utilising VEGA VEGAFLEX technology uses microwave pulses which are conducted along a cable or rod measuring probe. The measuring probe of the level sensor ensures that the signal reaches the medium undisturbed. The pulse signal is reflected by the mediums surface and is received by the processing electronics. This information is then used and converted into level information.
Level Sensors
Main Level Sensing Applications
The level of almost any liquid or solid can be measured using VEGA guided wave radar sensors. Guided radar is virtually unaffected by changes to product or process temperature, pressure, density, conductivity, vapours, build up or dust. No moving parts mean the radar level sensors are extremely reliable and eliminates the need for recalibration.
All guided wave radar sensors have built in linearisation software to calculate the level versus shape and provide direct output of volume on:-
Storage Vessels

Level Indication – Silos & Hoppers
Interfaces
VEGA are the worlds’ No.1 process radar manufacturer, with the experience of over 200,000 successful installations. In 1997 VEGA introduced the first two wire, loop powered radar to the market and are the established leaders in this field.

Measuring & Sensing Level & Pressure With VEGA Sensors
VEGAFLEX 86 Guided Wave Radar Level Measurement
Recovering waste oil in the recycling industry is a process with many process stages.
In the dewatering column the waste oil is separated from water and other elements that when heated to +105°C boil away in the lower part of the column. The heat causes the water to evaporate off. Pipes transport the oil through to the upper part of the dewatering column when the optimum temperature has been reached and any excess water has vaporised – it is essential to be able to accurately control the level in the dewatering column.
VEGA level sensors are used throughout industry to provide reliable, consistent and accurate measurement of level and pressure – contact us to discuss your requirements.
VEGA VEGAFLEX 86 level measurement sensor operates over 75 metre distance and temperature range -196 to 450°C
Guided Wave Radar Level Sensor
VEGAFLEX 86 guided wave radar level sensor is the ideal solution as a non-contact radar level measurement sensor would not be possible so the process is carried out in a bypass tube. Pump action and the heating make the surface oil very agitated and difficult to measure. Deposits in the bypass or overfill will not affect the performance of guided wave radar level sensors so reliable level measurement is guaranteed.

Level Sensors
Radar Level Measurement for Liquids & Solids
A radar level measurement instrument uses microwave signals to determine the level of a liquid or solid.
The instrument is placed above the medium and emits a microwave signal which is reflected back to the sensor from the surface of the medium.
The radar level sensor uses this data to determine the distance to the product surface and is thus able to calculate the product level.
The radar level measurement technique is commonly used for measuring liquids and solids in the process industry – applications include process tanks, storage tanks and silos.
This non-contact form of level measurement, utilising VEGA VEGAPULS technology, mean the readings are not influenced by temperature, pressure or product properties.
VEGA VEGAPULS
Radar Level Sensors for Liquids
Two different emission frequencies are available for the level measurement of liquids.
The compact, high-frequency K-band sensors VEGAPULS 61, 62 and 63 are particularly suitable for applications in which very high precision is required.
Excellent signal focusing is achieved even with small antenna sizes.
The low-frequency C-band sensors VEGAPULS 65 and 66, on the other hand, are better able to penetrate foam and strong condensate deposits and are thus suitable for especially difficult process conditions.
vega VEGAPULS
Radar Level Sensors for Solids
The high-frequency K-band sensors VEGAPULS 67 and 68 are applied for level measurement in bulk solids. Due to the excellent signal focussing, internal silo installations or build-up on the walls have no influence on the measurement.
The highly sensitive electronics, especially adapted to the requirements of bulk solids measurement, enables reliable level measurement of widely different products up to 75 metres.

In the following article, T&D overview several types of VEGA sensors used to measure level and pressure in petrochemical industry processes – ATEX level sensors with hazardous area certification are used extensively in “explosion-proof” applications for accurate level measurement.
ATEX Level Sensors – VEGA Level Measurement For Industrial & Hazardous Area Processes
ATEX Level Sensors
vega Level & Pressure Measurement On The Pipeline
Crude oil is transported either directly from the oil wells or from an oil terminal to the refinery via the pipeline. The pipeline is the means of transport

for various oil and distillation products. The environment is protected as concrete impounding basins can be found where pig valves or slide valve stations are located stopping leakages of the shut of devices.
Pressure measurement & Monitoring In The Pipeline With VEGABAR 52
The VEGABAR 52 pressure transmitter is especially well suited for this application. The mechanical construction of the sensor and its high overload resistance guarantee a reliable measurement of pressure conditions.
Reliable Level Switching Independent Of Product
The VEGA vibrating level switch VEGASWING 63 is ideal for detecting levels in the impounding basin delivering a dependable level signal that is completely product independent – the VEGA sensor complies with the requirements of SIL 2 for implementation in safety-critical applications.
ATEX Level sensor Certifications For Hazardous Areas
ATEX ia ATEX II 1G, 1/2G, 2G EEx ia IIC T6
ATEX na ATEX 3G EEx na II T5 … T1 X
ATEX D ATEX II 1/2D, 2D IP6X T, ATEX II 1/2/-D, 2D IP6X T
Accurate Level Signal With VEGAPULS 62
VEGAPULS 62 radar type ATEX level sensor is specified to provide continuous level measurement for leakage monitoring. Due to the level sensors small dimensions and powerful signal focussing, the sensor can be mounted very close to the vessel wall. VEGA non-contacting measuring principle operates independent of weather conditions and is completely maintenance free – the continuous level signal can also be used to generate multiple limit levels in the control system.
ATEX level sensor Certifications For Hazardous Areas

Interface Measurement With VEGAFLEX 67
Rain or ground water often penetrates into the impounding basin. To detect how much oil and how much water is in the basin, the VEGAFLEX 67 guided microwave sensor is applied. The VEGA sensor can measure the thickness of the oil layer as well as the total level in the basin. With this information, it provides the basis for deciding whether or not the facility poses a danger to the environment.
ATEX level sensor Certifications For Hazardous Areas
ATEX ia ATEX II 1G, 1/2G, 2G EEx ia IIC T6
ATEX ia+d ATEX II 1/2G, 2G EExd ia IIC T6
Should you require any support with the selection or specification of the correct industrial or hazardous area ATEX level sensor please contact T&D.
