ATEX Lighting Applications – Floodlights & Bay Lights Using Raytec SPARTAN
Raytec SPARTAN’s stockist and distributor Thorne & Derrick, are pleased to announce the launch of two of their most powerful ranges of Ex LED luminaires yet – the SPARTAN High Power Floodlights and SPARTAN High Power Bay Lights. Incorporating the same long life and maintenance friendly technology as Raytec’s core SPARTAN products, these two new ranges of hazardous area lighting are designed to deliver lighting into much bigger and higher areas.
Here are some practical examples of the new Raytec SPARTAN Flood and Bay lighting serving a range of Hazardous Area applications.
High Power Flood: Off Shore Life Boat Stations

High Power Flood Off Shore Life Boat Stations
Raytec SPARTAN Light Fittings
Raytec recently designed a lighting scheme using SPARTAN High Power Floodlights for the life boat drop areas of an offshore rig. The requirement was to use Zone 1 fittings and achieve 50 lux at sea level from a height of 20m. Raytec needed to illuminate all 4 corners of the rig where the lifeboats dropped, as well as lighting the 2 main vessel approach areas which were much further out. Given the mounting height, the size of area to be illuminated, and the lux level required, the High Power SPARTAN Floodlight was considered the best solution for safe and reliable hazardous area lighting.
Providing up to 23,000 delivered lumens in the Zone 1 floodlight variant, Raytec specified a lighting output angle of 60×60° for the boat drop areas and a much tighter beam of 30×30° to punch out to the distance required for the vessel approaches.
The directional nature of the High Power Flood LEDs along with the dedicated stirrup bracket allowed us to precisely tilt and position the lighting into the required space. This also helped Raytec deliver the maximum amount of light where it was most needed, easily achieving the required lux level with next to no upward light spill.
This type of hazardous area lighting application also typically requires emergency backup lighting. Other smaller emergency lighting from Raytec were specified alongside the High Power Floodlights to provide 20 lux of safety lighting – running at 100% light output on battery power in the case of a mains failure.
High Power Flood: Fuel Depot

High Power Flood Fuel Depot
Ex Lighting Using LED Lights
for Hazardous Areas
Another Ex lighting specification has seen the Raytec SPARTAN High Power Flood lighting used to deliver high lux levels to improve operations on an oil fuel depot. Encompassing 2 pumping platforms, multiple task areas, rescue areas, and walkways, the fuel depot needed to achieve 100 lux during normal operational hours.
The Zone 1 variants of the Raytec SPARTAN High Power LED Floodlights were deployed to replace old sodium lighting on the main platforms – this time using a wide 90×90° beam angle to cover a large ground area. They not only delivered powerful hazardous area lighting to meet the lux level required, but did so using far fewer luminaires. Each High Power Floodlight is to be column mounted so the fact that all SPARTAN Flood PSUs can be removed from the lighting allows the installation team to keep the PSU at ground level – meaning that maintenance and servicing can be carried out much more easily and quickly.
Along with Raytec LED Linear fittings replacing old fluorescent lighting on the walkways, and Raytec Bulkheads providing low level emergency lighting throughout the site, the whole new scheme is set to provide a much more reliable, long life and vibration resistant lighting solution – that is also more energy and cost efficient to run.
High Power Bay: Aircraft Hanger

High Power Bay Aircraft Hanger
High Bay Lighting for Hazardous Areas
In a typical high bay lighting application for hazardous areas, Raytec SPARTAN High Power Bay units have been designed into multiple Helicopter Hangers to provide powerful ceiling mounted illumination. The requirement was for Zone 1 light fittings to achieve 300 lux on the task area from 8m high.
Using fewer lighting fittings was an important design factor in this application which meant each luminaire had to deliver as much light as possible. Raytec SPARTAN were restricted in where the hazardous area lighting could be mounted, so using a smaller number of fittings with a wide 90×90° beam angle meant that over 350 lux could be achieved while maintaining good uniformity. In addition, the crisp, cool-white LED colour temperate ensures excellent visibility. The convenient ceiling mount bracket is also perfectly compatible with a wide range of mounting configurations.
Raytec LED Linear fittings with battery backup were also wall mounted at 2m high to provide 25 lux of lighting in emergency conditions.
High Power Bay: Gin Distillery

High Power Bay Gin Distillery
Zone 1 & Zone 2 Lighting
A gin distillery with both hazardous area Zone 1 and Zone 2 lighting requirements has seen SPARTAN High Power Bay lighting used to illuminate the higher areas of the site both internally and externally.
With a modest mounting height of 6m, Raytec SPARTAN were able to specify bay light fittings with a lower lumen output of 15,000 to achieve the required 200 lux during operational hours. Smaller Raytec LED Linear lighting fittings were used at lower mounting heights below 3-4m.
A mix of Zone 1 and Zone 2 fittings of the linear and bay fittings were used dependent on their proximity to the cylinders. All Raytec Zone 2 lighting, including the new SPARTAN Bay Light, offer the same external design as a Raytec Zone 1 fitting – providing the highest level of durability from any Zone 2 fitting on the market.

Zone 2 Hazardous Area ATEX Linear Light Fittings
ATEX Linear Light Fittings
Bridge Lighting
Raytec SPARTAN LED lighting fittings have transformed safety and efficiency for Erskine Bridge, a major crossing over the river Clyde in Scotland. As part of a high profile lighting and electrical upgrade, Zone 2 hazardous area linear fittings with emergency battery backup were installed inside the service tunnel as a fail-safe solution, designed not only to significantly improve lighting conditions for workers, but to deliver huge energy and maintenance savings as well.
Zone 2
Spanning 1,322m in length, the service tunnel contains all electrical and communication cables for the bridge’s services and road lighting. Made up of enclosed ‘box bay’ compartments approximately 2 metres long, all lighting within the tunnel was assessed to meet Zone 2 hazardous area requirements. Regular inspections are carried out to ensure all systems are working effectively – therefore safety inside the tunnel is paramount.
The existing 38W fluorescent strip lights were old and prone to failure, putting the safety of the workers at risk. The light output was also dropping fairly quickly after installation, requiring regular lamp changes to maintain appropriate lighting levels in the hazardous area location.
Raytec LED Linear Light Fittings
Recommended by sub-contractor Marmac Services Ltd., Raytec’s 18W LED Emergency Linear were chosen to replace and significantly improve the problems associated with the existing fluorescents.
Using Raytec’ s lighting design service, even before the project started it was possible to generate a 3D visual representation of how the final hazardous area lighting design scheme would look; showing lighting levels and light distribution that could be achieved from the Raytec SPARTAN lighting fittings. This identified the recommended number and placement of the light fittings required within the tunnel, and provided a real life insight into how the installation will perform.
Raytec 3D Lighting Design Models – Luminance modelling representing the final lighting design scheme for the Erskine Bridge service tunnel

Raytec Spartan Linear WL84 Emergency Lighting At Erskine Bridge
The final installation comprised two Raytec lighting fittings inside each box bay. With conveniently located cable entries that matched those of the fluorescent ATEX fittings, the Raytec SPARTAN lighting allowed for a direct and easy replacement.
LED
The new LED light fittings also increased lumen output to 100 lux, with dedicated optics to create an even light distribution covering the entire space. But crucially the LED lighting fittings have extended operational lifetime from 3 to 25 years – eliminating the need and cost of regular lamp changes. With much lower power consumption, the SPARTAN Linear fittings also delivered 50% energy savings.
The emergency battery backup, which would activate in the event of a power outage, guaranteed that workers would be able to safely exit the tunnel in the case of an emergency. Under emergency back-up the SPARTAN light fittings achieve an enhanced 50 lux; 40 lux more than the hazardous area lighting project requirements.

SPARTAN SPZ-WL84-EMX25 Emergency Linear Fitting Zone 2
Furthermore, as a hazardous area product, regular mandatory inspection of the SPARTAN lighting itself is required to ensure that it is in good working order. The easy access and modular design, allows for the quickest and most efficient checks to take place, going over and above any other product in the market – minimising time, labour and associate costs.
Barry Thompson, Raytec Director of Hazardous Area Division comments: “Initially the project planners were finding it a challenge to source a hazardous area lighting solution that not only improved lighting conditions and was more efficient, but a solution that offered reliability for Zone 2 environments AND offered emergency backup”.
“We’re delighted that with the help of our partner, Marmac Services, we’ve been able to solve and improve on a wide variety of operational challenges for Erskine Bridge. Thanks to our SPARTAN Zone 2 emergency range we were pleased to offer a solution that provided exceptional lighting inside the service tunnel, whilst ensuring safety of workers at all times”.

Zone 1 Nimbus LED Panel
EXPLOSION PROTECTION EX ib
The Nimbus low-profile Zone 1 LED Panel manufactured by Abtech provides significant weight savings over traditional T8 recessed hazardous area fluorescents that have for many years been the standard for internal lighting and illumination on offshore platforms and FPSOs.
With its launch, the benefits of long life and minimum maintenance associated with LED technology can become a reality for control rooms, living quarters and corridors that require the use of Ex-rated luminaires.
The intrinsically safe (Ex ib) Nimbus forms part of the Abtech hazardous area lighting range and is available in a selection of sizes from a 13W, 150x150mm panel to a 20W 300x600mm unit. Light output and distribution for the Nimbus compares to that of a recessed fluorescent.
Users can also choose from pure white (5700K) or warm white (3000K) LEDs to provide a colour temperature suited to their application. The Nimbus panel is both ATEX and IECEx certified for mains and battery backup options.

Hazardous Area Lighting
The LED panel is designed to be flush mounted below ceiling tile and is compatible with the multiple variants available on the hazardous area lighting market. The Nimbus driver unit is housed in a separate IP rated enclosure that can be mounted up to four metres away allowing potential space saving in the ceiling void.
As mounting is achieved with minimal (M4 sized) penetration through the tiles, the integrity of fire rated ceilings is maintained. The Nimbus is also supplied with a low smoke, zero halogen cable between the LED panel and driver unit.

“We have seen significant interest in this LED product from modular accommodation providers who are looking to take advantage of the benefits that solid-state lighting can offer. The barrier has always been the availability of an Ex-certified emergency luminaire.” comments Gareth Bruce, Marketing Manager at Abtech.
“Unlike fluorescents, LED technology is digitally controlled. Thus, desirable features for living and working areas such a dimming can be much more easily achieved. The Nimbus has been designed with a push-to-dim functionality as standard”.
The emergency version has a 6V 4.5Ah, Ni-Cd power pack that provides 120-minute emergency duration with 50% of the mains mode light output. There is also a 90 minute, 100% output version. To ensure the highest levels of safety the emergency Nimbus light fitting also features battery and driver status monitoring with a bi-coloured LED to indicate healthy operation of highlight fault conditions.
The Hazardous Area Electrical & Lighting Products from Abtech include: hazardous area lighting, stainless steel and GRP junction boxes, high voltage enclosures, local controls, cable glands and connection accessories.
