Stopping Crystallisation
Process Heating & Freeze Prevention for Liquid Bulk Storage In Drums & IBC’s
Bulk stored products can be at risk of crystallisation when subject to low ambient temperatures. To prevent this happening ins storage containers such as drums and IBCs, electrical heating jackets can be used to maintain optimum temperatures. Crystallisation of manufactured products has major negative impacts on transport and delivery times.
Most liquids freeze by crystallisation.
Crystallisationis the (natural or artificial) process by which a solid forms, where the atoms or molecules are highly organised into a structure known as a crystal.
Some of the ways by which crystals form are precipitating from a solution, freezing, or more rarely deposition directly from a gas. Attributes of the resulting crystal depend largely on factors such as ambient temperature, air pressure, and in the case of liquid crystals, time of fluid evaporation.
Crystallisation is a 2-step process: i) nucleation – the appearance of a crystalline phase from either a supercooled liquid or a supersaturated solvent ii) crystal growth – this is the increase in the size of particles and leads to a crystal state.
Controlling Chemical Storage Temperatures
Non-Hazardous & Hazardous Area Heaters
Many chemicals require to be stored within certain temperature parameters, with a minimum temperature and a maximum temperature that they can be safely stored at.
Our standard range of electric heaters are suitable for safe “non-hazardous” locations – contact us to discuss applications where the electrical heaters are to be deployed to provide process heating or frost protection in potentially explosive atmospheres such as Zone 1 or Zone 2 hazardous area locations according to the designation of the ATEX Directive.
If the temperature goes outside the specified minimum or maximum parameters, the chemical can be adversely affected and may be no longer be usable or worse still, may become volatile and dangerous. Temperature controlled chemical storage can be provided reliably by using process heating equipment such as heating jackets to warm the contents of drums and IBC’s to prevent freezing.
➡ Is your product too thick to pour or pump from Drums & IBC’s due to cold temperatures? Thorne & Derrick can help by heating and thinning heavy viscous liquids prior to pouring and pumping using a comprehensive range of electrical surface heating products.

ATEX Fans | Definite Concerns in Potentially Explosive Atmospheres
When working in industrial confined spaces the provision of air quality is important to personal health – now locate that confined space into an explosive atmosphere and safe ventilation becomes critical to life.
The set of challenges (ATEX Product Certification)and risk of hazards (Explosive Atmospheres) present considerable ventilation safety concerns to the hazardous area industries and confined space workers. The risk is real.
Extract | HSE : Confined Spaces A Brief Guide to Working Safely INDG258
Confined Spaces Can Be Deadly A number of people are killed or seriously injured in confined spaces each year in the UK. This happens in a wide range of industries, from those involving complex plant to simple storage vessels.
Those killed include people working in the confined space and those who try to rescue them without proper training and equipment.Read Guide.
Untangling ATEX
By Terry McDonald, Expert in Equipment for Explosive Atmosphere
The atmospheric presence of flammable gases or combustible dusts – in tanks, silos, vaults, sewers, shafts, tunnels or basements – means the technical specification, product certification and hazardous area classification of ventilation equipment must be scrutinised.
Demystifying ATEX, the name commonly given to the two European Directives for controlling explosive atmospheres and ensuring correctly certified equipment, can be complex and confused. Internet searches are awash with website links to spurious and frankly fake products purporting to be ATEX fans.
For instance this week, we received a technical enquiry from a leading manufacturer of healthcare products who were evaluating ventilation fans and ducting suitable for confined space working in hazardous areas (ATEX Zones) – the fans were required to be robust and reliable, portable yet powerful but above all Safe & Compliant.
The client had received several offers but had serious misgivings concerning actual product compliance with the ATEX Directive.
Following investigation and basic competitor analysis it was discovered that the fans did not comply to BSEN14986:2017 – this is a specific standard that sets out requirements for design, manufacture, testing and labelling of fans for use in potentially hazardous areas.
Stocked & Distributed by Thorne & Derrick | Exstream fans are the market-leading ATEX fan to provide powerful and portable ventilation in hazardous areas – specified for safe and reliable extraction and ventilation of dangerous gases and vapors in explosive atmospheres with airflow capability up to 7750m3/hr. Both ATEX & IECEx certified to Electrical & Non-Electrical Standards (Mechanical)for Zone 1 & Zone 2 ventilation applications.
ATEX Fans | Power supply either 230v or 110v/ 50Hz or 60Hz
Beware Fatal Fans!
It is becoming an increasing concern the amount of ATEX products which are finding their way onto the market place, which in my opinion belong in a scrap yard. Products are being put onto the UK and European market that are dangerous. Possibly, fatal.
Certificates prove compliance with the standards requested by the manufacturer but what if the manufacturer does not seek compliance with all the relevant standards for the product being manufactured? How can a manufacturer claim a fan is ATEX certified if it was never tested or checked for compliance with BSEN14986:2017?
The reality is that some of the components, perhaps the motor and the switch are correctly certified for use in explosive atmospheres, but this does not mean the complete fan unit will be compliant and safe to use.
When making any comparisons to other portable ATEX fans duty-holders must ensure they are certified to both ATEX electrical and ATEX mechanical standards. You should check for compliance with BSEN14986, ISO80079-36 and ISO80079-37.
We are aware of non-compliant ventilation fans in the market place which are less expensive but should be considered dangerous, even potentially killers, if ever used in an explosive atmosphere.
What if the end user or responsible person checking the certificate doesn’t know BSEN14986 exists?
They can’t check for compliance if they don’t know what it needs to comply with.
So how will they know that they are about to buy a non-compliant product and put their plant and employees at risk?
Clients put their trust in manufacturers and 3rd party notified bodies but this trust is being abused by a minority of faceless organisations who only wish to make a quick profit. We have even seen a recent example of a product being sold with a fraudulent ATEX certificate.

Confined Spaces HEAT | VENTILATION | POWER | LIGHT
uploaded by Chris Dodds | Sales & Marketing Manager with Thorne & Derrick International
In this post Thorne & Derrick – The Experts in Equipment for Explosive Atmospheres – explain the dangers of confined space working and how we alleviate those risks with the provision of certified and safe confined space lighting, power, heat and ventilation to ensure workers can carry out maintenance, repair and installation works in hazardous area locations with potentially explosive atmospheres.
What is a Confined Space?
“A confined space is a place which is substantially enclosed (though not always entirely), and where serious injury can occur from hazardous substances or conditions within the space or nearby (e.g. lack of oxygen)” – HSE | Health & Safety Executive UK.
Specific Confined Space Working Risks
The following factors common to working in confined spaces cause acute effects including impairment of judgement, unconsciousness and death. Confined Space can refer to any workplace, including a vessel, tank, container, pit, bund, chamber, cellar or any other similar space which, by virtue of its enclosed nature, creates those conditions that give rise to a likelihood of an accident, harm or injury of such a nature as to require emergency action.
Oxygen Deficiency
Oxygen Enrichment
Flammable or Explosive Atmospheres
Flowing Liquid or Free Flowing Solids
Excessive Heat
Claustrophobia is the irrational fear of confined spaces where the risk perception is subjective and personal.
However, the more rational dangers of confined space working, namely the threat to life posed by fire and explosive atmospheres, affects all workers.
Nevermind, possible hypoxia and asphyxiation caused by the suffocating effects of oxygen depletion.
Storage materials in confined spaces can deposit concentrations of potentially explosive vapours or gases – invisible but lethal potentially explosive pockets can accumulate presenting toxic and flammable hazards to workers.
For example, solvent-based paints and paint solvents are often flammable or emit vapours that pose hazardous risks when densely concentrated – such vapours can burst into flame when exposed to sparks or flames.
Reducing fire hazards and safety risks in confined spaces requires hazardous area certified explosion-proof heating, lighting, ventilation and power supply systems – a start-to-finish safety and rescue plan will review the specific equipment needed.
Confined space teams measure oxygen levels and toxic gas levels using portable gas detectors– hazardous atmospheres should be monitored for gas detection prior to entry and then continuously during the work task.
When the hazardous areas of a workspace or site have been classified, the remainder will be defined as non-hazardous, sometimes referred to as ‘safe areas’ – but how safe is “safe”?

LEADERS IN ATEX INNOVATION
T&D are your first-choice provider of innovative and competitive solutions to ensure ATEX & IECEx Compliance for Hazardous Area Electrical, HVAC & Process Instrumentation Equipmentto your UK and international projects.
At T&D we are regularly asked: “what’s the best drum heater to heat ‘X’ product?”.
It’s a tricky question to answer. Our drum heaters and bulk container heaters are used in diverse applications across hundreds of industries and consequently one rule doesn’t suit all heating requirements.
The problem with giving specific recommendations are the variables involved. Variables such as heat-up time, stirring or not stirring, acceptable condition of product after heating and possible flash points. The workplace location of the drum heating requirement determines whether a “safe” area or hazardous area certified (ATEX) heater is required – drum heaters certified for safe use in hazardous areas and potentially explosive atmospheres can be supplied.
Drum Heating
Jacket Heaters For Plastic & Metal Drums
T&D offer two different types of heaters for drums; heaters for plastic drums and heaters for metal drums.
Our option for plastic containers is the HISD. An easy to fit, efficient and effective insulated heating jacket solution for all types of drums; particularly plastic containers, our HISD insulated Jacket heater is used for gentle warming of drum contents.
This heater is suitable for products which have a high viscosity; foodstuffs such as glucose, syrups and honey, which take a significant amount of time to absorb heat. Designed and constructed from high quality, durable materials the HISD drum heater is manufactured with a double insulated silicone heating cord which is threaded evenly across the length of the heater.
HTSD Drum Heater
This drum heater is the one to choose for thermally efficient heating of products which require consistently gentle heating.
There are several options available from T&D for heating products stored in metal drums. Firstly, the HTSD Side Drum Heater is specifically designed for melting or reducing the viscosity of products that require aggressive heating or high temperatures for handling.
Used to achieve product temperatures of up to 200°C this heating jacket provides the industry standard for handling products such as waxes, soaps and materials with a high water content.
Constructed with an outer layer of silicone coated glass fibre the HTSD has excellent thermal transfer properties and presents a great solution for maintaining consistently high product temperatures when held in metal drums or storage containers.
The HTSD is favoured when the entire contents of the drum needs to receive heat from top to bottom. It also acts as an insulation jacket once heated ensuring that the contents of the drum are heated as economically as possible.
Our HSSD is an effective and simple element offering exceptional heating performance. The heater delivers uniform heating from accurately positioned PTFE coated, multi-stranded resistance wires and is used to reduce the viscosity of materials such as soaps, fats, foodstuffs, varnishes and chemicals allowing them to be pumped or poured with ease.
The HSSD is the drum heater of choice for products which are moving in and out of drums and consequently the level of material inside the drum fluctuates. Three of these heaters can be placed on one drum at the same time offering the option of turning off the top two heaters as the level inside the drum drops.
Manufactured from 2mm thick mild steel for extra rigidity on uneven surfaces and with tapered edges for safe drum location the HBD Base Drum Heater is designed for use in tough industrial environments. The product supplies heat through an etched foil silicone heating element bonded under the platen area and is protected by a resilient high temperature coating.
Used for similar purposes to (and sometimes in conjunction with) the HSSD, the Base Drum Heater offers uniform heating across the base of a drum ensuring the product is evenly heated to anywhere up to 150°C. This product is favoured for the same reasons as the other two high temperature options but is T&D’s most robust drum heating element.
As always, T&D are available to contact for further application advice on which drum heater to use.
Selecting Drum Heaters
When you call us please be sure to let us know; the material of your drum, what your product is, what the ambient temperature of the application is, what heating temperature you want to achieve and how quickly you want to heat the product. Please remember all of the above products are available as bespoke items – contact Thorne & Derrick to discuss your drum heating requirements.
