Micronics U1000 Clamp On Flow Meter
Easy To Install Alternative To Cutting Pipes
Micronics U1000 is a fixed installation, clamp-on flowmeter that is easy to install and requires the minimum of information to be entered by the user. Unlike other clamp-on flowmeters, the U1000 transducer separation distance is factory preset to the internal diameter (ID) of the application pipe.
Micronics flow meters avoid any need to cut into water pipes allowing maintenance to heating systems without shutting down the system – Micronics U1000 and U3000 flowmeters feature integral energy calculators and data loggers. The flowmeters can be configured for pipe size reducing on-site setting up requirements.
Both the electronics and guide rail housings form an integral unit that is attached to the pipe using the supplied jubilee clamps. Power to the flowmeter is provided by an external 12 – 24V ac/dc power supply.
U1000 is intended to operate on steel pipes with ID’s in the range 48mm (2”) to 164mm (6”).
Measuring the thermal heat/energy consumption of hot (LTHW) and chilled water services to monitor, control and manage energy consumption is a key area in building services and energy management. But the installation process including system drain down, pipe cutting etc has always been a significant cost and barrier to wider application of sub-metering.
At last a solution has arrived, the Micronics U1000 clamp on flow meter from Micronics, the UK’s longest established manufacturer of clamp-on ultrasonic meters.
Building on their many years of experience and success in this area, Micronics has now developed a best value clamp-on heat/energy meter to compliment its successful U1000 clamp-on flow meter and facilitate the wider use of clamp-on ultrasonic flow measurement for water sub-metering and thermal heat/energy measurement.
The Micronics U1000 HM is a simple out of the box, onto the pipe heat/energy metering solution with no programming or specialist engineering required.
All you have to do is clamp the unit to the pipe, select the pipe size, release the sensor clamps, secure the pre-wired, clamp-on PT100 flow and return temperature sensors and connect power to the pre-wired cable provided.

Yes, it really is that simple because Micronics have listened and simple installation is a key design feature. Another cost-effective alternative to expensive in-line meter installation from Micronics with no drain down or cutting of pipes required plus dry servicing, providing minimum downtime and maximum availability.
Retrofit savings on existing heating and chilling plant are obvious, eliminating the need for expensive drain down, pipe cutting etc. The potential for saving on new build may not be so obvious because mechanical services installers are already present on site.
However, the installed savings on pipe sizes greater than 50mm within new build applications are also significant in comparison with traditional in-line metering products. And the larger the pipe-work for example in chilled water lines the greater the potential savings.
Using costs from Spons M&E the price for installing an 80mm insertion meter with maintenance bypass in steel pipe would be circa £2,000 more than the installation of an equivalent clamp-on meter.
Competitive tendering may reduce these rates but the installation saving will still be significant and coupled with the subsequent dry servicing and maximized availability, the advantages and business case is clear, particularly for critical HVAC systems such as data centre’s or similar.

The Micronics U1000 HM is a clamp-on, transit time, ultrasonic flow meter plus PT100 temperature sensors designed to provide accurate measurement of liquid flowing within a closed pipe plus the flow and return temperature difference to calculate the heat/energy load, without the need for any mechanical parts to be inserted through the pipe wall or to protrude into the flow system.
It takes just a few minutes to install and there is no need to shut down flow or drain the system! It’s also Modbus compatible, so it can be used as a standalone meter or an integrated part of your aM&T or BEM’s system at no extra cost.
So if you need to meter the heat/energy load of hot (LTHW) or chilled water services as part of your energy management strategy or building services, for retrofit or new build applications, the U1000 HM should be a ‘must consider’ solution.
Typical applications for the Micronics U1000 clamp on flow meter include hot and chilled water metering and flow measurement, potable and process water metering and flow measurement and ultrapure water measurement.

Thorne & Derrick are an ASCO Numatics Authorised Distribution Channel and suppliers of ASCO Solenoid Valves to the oil, gas, chemical and process industries – this includes the most extensive range of hazardous area solenoid valves for all Zone, Class & Division with ATEX and IECEx certifications
T&D are pleased to present the new ASCO Hazardous Area Location Solutions Catalogue : the publication assists, informs and supports the specification and selection of the correct solenoid valve with ATEX certification for hazardous area locations and process industry applications, including Ex d flameproof valves andexplosion proof solenoid operators.
What is ATEX?
“ATEX” is an acronym for “ATmosphere EXplosive” i.e. explosive atmosphere. An explosive atmosphere is a mixture of flammable gases, vapours, mists or dusts with air, under specific atmospheric conditions in which, after ignition has occured, combustion propagates to the flammable mixture.
In order for a potentially explosive atmosphere to form, the flammable substances must be present in a certain concentration. If the concentration is too low (lean mixture) or too high (rich mixture), no explosion occurs: instead there is just a slow combustion reaction or no reaction at all.
To summarise, the explosion can occur only in the presence of an ignition source and when the concentration is within the explosive range of substances i.e. between the lower explosive limit (LEL) and upper explosive limit (UEL). The explosive limits depend on the ambient pressure and the percentage of oxygen in the air.
ATEX Directives
The European Union has implemented two harmonized hazardous area directives, known as ATEX 94/9/EC (also ATEX 100a, which, as of April 2016, will be replaced by the new directive 2014/34/UE and ATEX 99/92/EC (also ATEX 137).

ATEX – Definition of a Location Where A Potentially Explosive Atmosphere May Occur
ATEX Certified Valves
The hazardous area classification of an installation into distinct zones has two objectives (according to ATEX 1999/92/EC) : –
To define the categories of equipment, including solenoid valves, used in the zones indicated, provided they are suitable for gases, vapours or mists and/or dusts.
To classify hazardous places into zones to prevent ignition sources and be able to select the correct electrical and non-electrical equipment accordingly. The zones are defined on the basis of the occurrence of explosive gaseous or dusty atmospheres.
Consult T&D Technical Sales Engineers for specification support in determining the correct ATEX solenoid valves.

ASCO Valves – History & Future Innovation
Age builds trust.
ASCO, in 1888 started out manufacturing elevator, compressor and generator controls.
In 1910 ASCO became the first company to develop and manufacture a new electrically operated control device known as the solenoid valve.
Since then, ASCO have pioneered and patented many designs of ATEX solenoid valves for flow control in hazardous areas – a track record that extends back decades but continues to innovate in the field of flow control today.
ASCO offers hundreds of solenoid valve constructions, many with ATEX certification and various global approvals that can be exported worldwide.
ASCO solenoid valves are famous for their robust operator heads and extended service lives – the valves are ideal for the mission-critical demands of power generation, chemical processing, oil, gas, and refining applications, plus general machinery, wellhead control, mining equipment and measuring and controlling devices.
Hazardous Area ATEX Solenoid Valves
ASCO 551
ASCO 551 solenoid valves are primarily used for valve piloting applications. The pilot exhaust is collected in the main valve exhaust for dust and water protection. Valve actuator and pilot valve are isolated from the main environment.

Hadar Lighting – Hazardous Area Lighting Safety Alert, February 2017
Hadar Lighting
The views expressed in this post do not necessarily reflect the views of T&D.
Thorne & Derrick, The Explosive Atmosphere Experts, have a professional duty of care to customers protecting their workers and their plant against the potentially explosive effects of sub-standard or under-specified hazardous area equipment, including lighting.
Recently, serious misgivings with respect to the ATEX hazardous area certification and testing of Hadar Lighting products have emerged triggering a frenzy of social media rumour-mongering, back biting and some untruths.
In this post, we reproduce the unquestionable findings and conclusions of the recent HSE Safety Alert in full – we identify the potentially life threatening lights and highlight the action points for sites utilising defective Hadar Lighting luminaires.
Department Name: Field Operations Directorate
Bulletin No: FOD 1-2017
Issue Date: 10th January 2017
Target Audience: Users of Hadar ATEX hazardous area lighting equipment manufactured by A-Belco Group
Key Issues: This Safety Alert informs end users of potential compliance and safety concerns with certain Hadar Lighting Luminaire Products
the Issue
“these luminaires may present a source of ignition that could result in a fire or explosion when used in potentially flammable atmospheres….”
This alert is aimed at those using Hadar HDL100, HDL106, HDL 206 or HDL109 series of luminaires, part of the Hadar ATEX range of hazardous area lighting products.
These lighting products were manufactured by the Hadar Division of the A-Belco Group during the period 2006 – 2016 and are intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.
Testing of sample products by a Notified Body has identified that they do not meet the required standards for impact resistance and ingress protection or the Essential Health and Safety Requirements of the ATEX Directives (94/9/EC and its replacement 2014/34/EU) based upon the temperature ranges communicated for this range of light fittings.
As such they are not considered to comply with the Directive (or the UK implementing Regulations “The Equipment and Protective Systems Intended for Use in Potentially Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 1996” (SI 1996-192).
Consequently, these luminaires may present a source of ignition that could result in a fire or explosion when used in potentially flammable atmospheres identified under the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (DSEAR). They may also fail to operate safely or effectively when used in wet or dirty environments.
Action required
Where Hadar HDL100, HDL106, HDL206 and HDL109 luminaires are installed in accordance with hazardous zones identified by a DSEAR risk assessment, it is recommended that an inspection in accordance with BS EN 60079-17 is completed. Particular attention should be paid to the following:
Signs of moisture or condensation within the housing beyond allowable limits of the standard.
Defects in the outer cover, for example; deformation, cracking, crazing or degradation.
It is recommended that any defective luminaires be replaced with products conforming to the requirements of the ATEX Directive and with the required level of protection for the hazardous zone identified under DSEAR. Non-defective luminaires should continue to be regularly inspected and maintained in accordance with BS EN 60079-17 to ensure they are safe for continued use.
BS EN 60079-17:2014 Explosive Atmospheres. Hazardous Area Electrical Installations, Inspection & Maintenance
For areas not classified as hazardous by a DSEAR risk assessment, where luminaires have been selected as a result of their ingress protection rating and/or provide a safety function, they should be inspected, paying particular attention to points a. and b. above and an assessment made as to whether they are safe for continued use.
Relevant legal documents
The relevant legal requirements are:
The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974
The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER)
The Equipment and Protective Systems Intended for Use in Potentially Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 1996
(Note: the 1996 Regulations have been replaced by The Equipment and Protective Systems Intended for Use in Potentially Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2016, which implement the 2014 ATEX Directive; these Regulations apply to products supplied on or after 8 December 2016)
The Lights Go Out At Hadar
The factory gates were locked one last time at Hadar Lighting in November 2016 as efforts to rescue the struggling firm faltered amidst piling debts, market downturns and alleged “self-inflicted” problems.
A statement from Deloitte said: “A-Belco Ltd assembles lighting and electrical contracting products and its divisions include – Hadar Lighting, A-Belco Hazardous Area, Electrical Engineering and Industrial Connectors.
“The Company has suffered from its exposure to the Oil and Gas industry and was looking to raise external finance as part of its turnaround strategy but wasn’t successful.”
50 jobs lost as Hadar Lighting enters administration. Image: Evening Chronicle.
Hadar had developed an extensive range of LED and other Ex hazardous area lighting products, including Zone 1 and 21, Zone 2 and 22 – accolades included winning the 2014 North East Exporter of the Year Award for developing lighting solutions for hazardous areas which have a high risk of ignition such as oil rigs, offshore gas platforms, petrochemical refineries and distilleries.
Should you require any technical support or specification guidance on selecting replacements for existing Hadar Lighting products or new hazardous area lighting projects please do not hesitate to contact T&D – as former distributors for Hadar Lighting we are familiar with their product range and can provide alternative ATEX certified lighting systems.
T&D have made every effort to contact their clients who have previously purchased the Hadar light fittings in question, however if you are concerned about the safety of your hazardous area lighting please feel free to contact us regardless of where and when you purchased the items from and we will be happy to help.
Final Words
“12 months ago 4 individuals that worked for A-Belco resigned on the spot due to serious safety concerns with the Hadar products. All 4 were treated in a disgusting manner by the senior management, branded as liars and trouble makers and slandered in front of ex-colleagues, customers, suppliers and friends. Off the back of these resignations the HSE began an investigation into the practices at A-Belco, all 4 have today been fully vindicated in their actions and proved correct. Many of you will have seen press outlining the demise of A-Belco and Hadar lighting – now the truth is out, those involved and 1 person specifically should be ashamed of his actions and words.”
